Does the pinch hurt??

Where we discuss the behavior of our hermit crabs, as in fights, pecking orders, shell swaps, etc. Please post all naked-crab posts in the Emergency forum.

Yeah, you'll get used to holding them. ;) It takes time!
Yeah, they grab on with their legs, haha, sometimes I think "Uh-oh, are you trying to pinch me with your legs?!" LOL but they just want to get a grip so they can stay on your hand!

Ganymede's only pinched me once, she's a medium PP. She was mad, and I could tell. she wouldn't let go for a while, and when she did, she pinched extra hard for a moment, to make sure I got the point! Even then, she didn't draw blood, and I wouldn't be upset if it happened again. I would definitely be a little freaked out though, if I was holding a particularly shy Jumbo crab, because shy ones tend to pinch more as far as I can tell. Anyway, I wouldn't be too afraid to get pinched. Just flatten out your palm really well and they don't have much to pinch.

I've been pinched twice by a large straw and medium PP, as well as many 'love pinches' with my jumbos little claw. And yeah, it does hurt a little. But, if you ever do get pinched, do not freak out, and throw your crab across the room. ( No, i've never done that! But I did see a video on YouTube. :( ) If the crab pinches you, and doesn't let go, then calmly walk over to the sink, and run the pincher under warm water. He should let go, if not... then you have to wait for him to let go. :P

The worst pinch I've ever had was from a crab who was missing his legs on the left side. I was crab shopping in PetCo and was holding this strange crab. I guess he felt uneasy and pinched. He would not let go and piched harder every couple of seconds. The employee who was helping me saw my face scrunch up and was like "OMG... is he pinching you?". My response was "yeah just a bit". He let go on his own and I ended up have a bruise but no blood. Typically, crabs don't pinch unless they are startled or feel like they can fall. However, there are a small group of grumps out there that sometimes pinch just because they can. I actually think the little guys hurt worse cause they sometimes get a grip on the flesh between your fingers... Socks work wonderfully and so do gloves if you really feel uncomfortable holding them....

I am so proud of myself.. I decided to just get in there and give it a try so the other day I put a sock over my hand and I was able to hold my crabs for the first time. (thanks to everyone who gave me that idea, it REALLY helped me to feel more comfortable) I just let them come out one at a time and they crawled all over my hand... no one even tried to pinch me. Tonight my biggest, max, who is actually in iso because he's showing signs of molting decided to say hello.. so I took him out and offered him a slice of banana, ALL WITH MY BARE HANDS!! YAY me! I didn't feel scared or anything. I think starting out with the sock really helped me to get used to and to prepare myself for feeling their legs on me since for some strange reason that was the thing that was freaking me out about holding them. lol

Now.. I know you are not supposed to mess with the crabs when they are in pre though post molt but Max decided to un-bury himself and when my husband would walk by the tank max would follow him.. he would go from one side of the tank to the other. Then when I went into the room later on Max actually came over to the glass and put his feelers to the glass and then propped his legs on the glass to say hello to me. He's never done this before so I figured if he wanted to be active I would say a quick hello. Too cute!! Just wanted to add this little note since I mentioned above that I messed with a molter.. didn't want anyone to think that I dug him up to hold him or anything.

the worst pinch i have ever received was from Lord Voldemort, a big, tough old purple pincher i rescued...no matter how much i worked with him, he did NOT like to be handled and would pinch every time...i had blood blisters all over my hand!

Yes it hurts, but it's not as bad as you may think. Just remain calm, keep your palm open and flat, and they will latch on with their legs as u mentioned if they dont feel a secure flooring beneath them..

i tend to 'walk' my hands one in front of the other once they start moving around..and always keep your hands low to some sort of softer surface so if they do topple out of your hand they are less apt to get hurt.

also, if one does pinch me and wont let go, i just tough it out and lower my hand back into the crabitat until the crab realizes hes home, lets go and scurries off my hand, i never run them under water personally because it seems more stressful and they may pinch harder

I was pinched by my golfball-sized Indo/brevimanus two months ago. It ripped skin about a millimeter long and thick and drew blood. It was irritating pain, a la paper cut.

I totally understand what you are saying "Golsama". We just purchased a small hermie the other day. Her name is Sadie. Beautiful little girl :D , acts like the  .

I've never heard them chirping before, but she left me know today she did not want to be messed with. Gave me heck and then pinched me. Wow baby, thank goodness she's just a little thing. She didn't want to let go. She's the only one that has ever showed any "witchiness".

Still love my babies though.

Good for you Daisy! The best way to confront our fears is to face them, but I prefer to face mine in small doses
