My Last Crab...Gone =(
My Last Crab...Gone =(
okay so my last hermit crab Jasper molted, i waited a week becuz he was back to himself. I changed to a better substrate, sand and yesterday i found him lose a leg and by the water. I read that sometimes if they lose things and go by the water, they will die, so i made sure the cage was perfect and put him by the food /water dishes. When I came home he was out of his shell and nto moving...dead =(
CAn making things better stress them out and kill them...if so i was just doing whats best
also the deattached leg had white liquid oozing from it, im assuming cuz he jsut molted a week ago..or?
hopefully when my 29g gets set up with ideal conditions to begin with ill have alot better luck with my crabs. I now know everything good to do, unfortunately i think most ppl go thru a period with hermit crabs where they had wrong info. Also to secure that I searched for hermit crabs and found videos on a lady who had NO CLUE HOW TO CARE FOR THEM! Also, many pages explaining partial or wrong care..
So i wass trying to help my crab but i hope when i get my nice new awesome setup i will ahve better luck.
Sorry for such a long post.

Sounds like some bleeding that didn't close properly.rhoney wrote:any1 know about the white ooze from the lost appendage?
My condolences. Something like that happened to me once, but from a longtime goliath birdeater tarantula.

If you are in the market for some new ones, and have the cash to pay (ie. like for 2 xbox360 games or 2 playstation 3 titles or sumptin...

Unless you already checked it out.

So sorry you lost your crabs. I am sure that you are now knowlegable enough to have success with crabs. I agree with shadowkid33...wait until your new tat is set up before you get more hermies.
Just like with my incubator..I always want to set the eggs the day I turn it on. DUH! I have to wait for it to heat up and maintain temp and humidity. Make sure everything is right before I put the little ones in.
I know being patient is hard, but it really is what's best for the crabs.

this is gonna sound weird, but let yourself be a little obsessed with them, ask questions even if they seem silly, and ultimately do what you think is best for them. The only way to know a crab is behaving differently is to watch them a lot, see what they do and don't eat, how they interact, and what they like to play with and climb. as long as the basic conditions are good there's actually a lot of "playing room" with these guys, where you can get creative with in tank stuff, and foods. Have fun with it!

5 pp's(largest to smallest): Rogue, Ty, Scout, Shelley, Jekyll,
You are indeed right.I now know everything good to do, unfortunately i think most ppl go thru a period with hermit crabs where they had wrong info
When we first bought our 2 hermit crabs, we had no idea about proper conditions, what they ate, what type of water to use, etc. That was until I came here and did all the reading I possibly could, and asking all of the necessary questions. Unfortunatly, the 2 crabs we purchased didn't make it, probably due to my lacking of knowledge (this was before I came here). So I bought more and they are healthy and being treated correctly.
I haven't been here for a while, but I am happy to say all 5 of my hermit crabs have successfully molted (I have 6, but the new one hasn't done anything yet). In fact, one of them just came up this morning (his name is Blunt). If it wasn't for this forum/website I bet they would all be dead right about now.
