And... he opened the tank??

Post by HaydenHermie » Sat Jul 14, 2012 12:27 pm

I am thoroughly impressed...and kind of aggrivated, by Thulian opening the slide-lock lid. He opened it enough that he could unlock it, but didn't get much further than that. Like I said, still impressed.

I'm going to have to lock it on the other side as well now because I bet if he had another half hour or so of patience, he'd probably be able to pry it open eough to climb out. >.<

The lock on there now is a part of the tank. You slide the lid underneath it and there are two pieces that "click" together to keep it in place. Either they weren't clicked from the last time I was in the tank, or he was able to undo that from the inside. Either way, there is no doubt a second lock is going on that tank.

And here I thought I was outsmarting these crabbies.
That's really not bad, though. They've been in their new tank setup since Wednesday, and just now figured how to open it up. Not bad at all. XD

THIS is why I used to keep a brick on top the hinged aquarium lid when I had that on my tank. :) Now that my guys can get to the screened lid of my 90 I have 4 heavy duty tank locks on it!

LOL

That is too funny. Maybe I should weigh down the top as well? Thankfully you have to be outside of the tank to unlock the second lock. There's a lever that you need to lift in order to get it to unfold, then you have to lift it up. So I'm sure they wont be able to manage that one. Didn't say they wouldn't try, though. XD

I don't think it's a want to escape with them, more-so as it's just something they can do. They're very curious, as I've notice, and anything that they get into they want to examine it to the fullest. =) It's really cute seeing them money-climb upside down on the mesh lid. XD

On another note, I believe I need a deeper salt water bath. They nose-dive into the fresh water, but never really want to go into the salt water. =/

Definitely weigh down your lid. I do, because recently Romulus has enjoyed climbing on the top of the tank... don't want to take any risks. :P

I keep my hermit crab tank at home while I live at school (only 15 minutes away) and I got a frantic call from my Mom this morning that ony of my crabs was walking around on top of the tank. She wasn't sure what to do, and it was my biggest crab (slightly smaller than the palm of my hand) so I ended up having to take the bus home and put him back in - luckily he hadn't figured out a way to climb down the slide of the tank! I missed my first class but I'm just glad I could get him back in! Now there is a FULL piggy bank sitting on top of the lid.

I have a hole in the screen to put the humidifier tube. I always worry. Luckily none of my little helmits have escaped yet. I shall start being more careful though.

So glad I've got heavy sliding doors that they either can't open or can't figure out how to open. They do climb straight up them all the time though!

Also, these: http://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=ch ... 36&bih=776
Never had an escape when I used them on smaller tanks with regular screen lids.

One of my hermit crabs (Dwable) has learned to climb up one of my tank's corners and "locks" himself in that position for a few hours at a time in the morning and night. When I had opened the lid to change the food and water, he took that opportunity to try and escape. He clung to the outer edge of the tank, and I had to lightly spray water on him. Dwable eventually climbed back in, just enough for me to put the lid back on. He has now almost escaped 3 times this week using this technique...I think he has learned his escape route. I just hope the other 2 don't follow in his footsteps...
