Burrows correspond to crab size?

Post by fantasybookworm » Thu May 28, 2015 9:17 pm

I have two burrow holes in my tank sub at the moment. So far the only crab I've actually seen up is Pippin, one of the smalls. He came out when I accidentally terrorized him while changing out the water bowls a few days ago. I need to change them again tomorrow, so I may end up seeing him again, if I alarm him too much.

My question is...Do the size of burrow holes typically correspond to the size of crab? Or will they make slightly bigger ones sometimes or something? One of them is quite wide & I can't tell if it's his, or might be from the medium crab, Boromir, and I just haven't seen him yet. The other hole is smaller & I'm pretty sure it's the one Pippin is coming out of.

Normally, yeah, my big guys leave huge craters and the small ones leave little holes. Sometimes I'll have a big crab disappear with hardly any sign, though, or my little guys will go dig-crazy.

Makes sense, thank you! I'll have to just try & be patient and wait to see then. Maybe once I start changing the water pools tomorrow, everyone will get mad & come up to hide from the giant. It'd be nice to see the other two again & verify that they are still alive.

Another question related to this...do crabs typically "plug" up their burrows when they're down in them, by filling the entrance with loose sand? Both of the burrows are like that in the day, and I just want to make sure that's normal or if it means the sand isn't wet enough. I have a lot of trouble keeping the top of the sand at sandcastle consistency... :? I need to get myself more in the habit of spraying it AM & PM or something to help.

Yes, they often fill their tunnels in behind them as they go.

Okay, good. I'll still work on getting myself on a sub-misting schedule, but it's at least a comfort to know it's not actively causing them problems! Thanks for reassuring me. :)
