Why is she being so violent?

Post by StarWarsHermitCrab » Thu May 28, 2015 10:39 pm

So my new hermit crab revan is up from his first molt.
And violet has been up for two weeks now,
so this is the first time I've seen violet interact with another hermit crab since she killed Shelby.

I watched violet and revan walk up to each other, and they started waving their antennas.
And violet immediately started trying to pinch revan.

What is Violet's problem?
I thought she would stop being aggressive after her molt.

Rinse revan in the salt water pool. There is probably a lingering delicious molt smell. Displays of dominance generally happen after one crab has been down for a while and resurfaces. Restoration of the pecking order and all that. Just make sure they have plenty of protein and calcium sources for their post molting nutrition needs.

I've already rinsed him in the salt water pool.

And they have plenty of protein and calcium sources.

What about extra shells? It's recommended to have at least 3 appropriate sized/kinds of extra shells per crab. Preferred Shell Guide

Can you describe exactly what she was doing that you consider aggressive? Pinching is definitely something to keep a close eye on.

Having plenty of protein and calcium available is great! Just make sure to vary the sources as much as you can.

There are six shells for violet, three turbos, and three magpies.

What I consider to be aggressive is the pinching.
Violet reached out with her BP and started trying to grab revans legs.

This is definitely something that you want to keep a close eye on. After all we all don't want a passed hermit crab. This might not sound to good but for how long have the two hermit crabs been in the same enclosure for? It might be that one of the hermit crabs is trying to dominate. I would suggest to keep them in two different tanks and you can start a time every day to take them out and let them roam together and see how they interact. Iv'e had hermit crabs for over a year now and I have 4 strawberry and 2 PPs in a 200 gallon fish tank. Trust me with what I'm saying. This should work out. Please let me know the progress!

If it continues, isolating the bully does often help. In that time, load him up with his fill of shells and good foods. Maybe even wait for him to complete another molt. Then try him back in the main tank again (after a freshwater dip). If you can, pick up some other types of shells to offer too. In my experience, they rarely go back to magpies once they switch out of them.

Edit: *her. Sorry. I'm so used to saying him.

Violet seems to have calmed down, but if I see her trying to attack revan again
i will isolate her.
