Boromir the Brave

Post by fantasybookworm » Sat Jun 06, 2015 10:01 am

Boromir's been everywhere in the tank during the past couple of days. :D He's definitely settled in & enjoying the new place. I haven't caught him on the flower & leaf bowls yet, but they've both been disturbed at least once, so I know he's getting up there too. I've been really lucky that he's been doing things during the middle of the day, even, so I've been able to get pictures!

Perched on the freshwater pool:

I've caught him there twice - the first time (in the picture) he more or less gracefully climbed down using the nearby plant:

Image

The second time, I startled him when I opened the lid without knowing he was there & he fled into the far corner of the pool, underwater. Luckily he didn't bother to stay there long & made his escape to the cork log as soon as I stepped away to fix their dry food bowl.

He's also been in the moss pit:

And in the shell shop (today):

He's still in there now, shoving shells around. I think most of the ones in there are more for the little guys...I'd spread his out around on the sub, so I suppose I'll have to move them back up tonight.

The night before last, I went to take the dry food bowl out & discovered Merry had burrowed underneath it. Not a good choice, bud. But I was happy to finally find out what kind of shell he chose - an unpolished green turbo!

Image

And I don't know what it is with these two, but Merry chose a giant one too - he can also disappear into it.

 Rue has chosen a similar choice of shell, and unless she's changed during "the great hide" this past week, it's massive on her.
I miss seeing them. I'm normally working afternoons, but even when I'm off they seem to be hiding. Hopefully they start coming out more soon, or we get the "Crabby Cam" set up heh Other than shells being knocked out of the shop, and food dragged around, you'd think it was an empty tank heh

I just noticed tonight that Boromir did end up changing shell - he chose another green turbo, so I didn't notice right away. But this one is unpolished & doesn't have the silver stripe. I want to take him out to measure the opening & see how well he fits, but I don't want to terrify him! He was already upset with me earlier because I changed the water pools. He's sitting happily in the supplements dish right now, chowing down on worm castings.

I'm sure they'll start coming back up soon! Have you noticed if the temperature or humidity has changed at all & might be causing the hiding? Totally guessing, but maybe. I felt like I was taking care of an empty tank for a while too, especially with the food not even being touched. I saw Pippin occasionally, but otherwise, nothing. Just hang in there & hopefully you'll see some action again soon!

I heard a huge crack from the tank, so I went to see what Boromir was up to. Not sure what he did to cause the crack, but he was hanging out near the front of the tank (maybe fell from the leaf/flower bowls?). I grabbed him out to do a shell opening measure & say hi. He's such a good crabby! He's never once tried to pinch me since I got him. He came out to crawl on me briefly, and even posed for a picture. :D I love him, he's so cute. I still haven't gotten a definite check to make sure he really is a boy, but eventually.

Chowing down on earthworm castings:

"I didn't do anything!"

"Er...this isn't sand, mom."

I know I'm biased, but he's such a handsome baby! :D

Thank you both! And hehe...I'm going to have so much fun with the LOTR theme once I'm able to start setting up my tote crabitat properly! :D

There is so much you can do with it. My theme is Greek gods but if I had it to do over it would be Wheel of Time. My favorite book series ever. Written by Robert Jordan. I named my new guy Rand after the main character.

Man, I thought I replied to your comment, Kelly! Sorry, lol.

I love the Greek gods theme too, though! And I bet you have an easier time finding decorations that fit the theme, lol. I haven't read Wheel of Time yet, but it's been on my reading list for years...I've just never gotten around to it. I will someday!

More pictures of my outgoing boy here -

Checking out some fresh eggshell, he seems to like them quite a bit

Image'

He climbed up on the lower level of my two-level shelf for the first time (that I've seen)! Unfortunately, I'm a bad mom, so there was nothing up there for him to do & he just sat there looking like he was thinking "Well, what was the point of this?" I need to find something interesting to put up there...maybe the supplements bowl? I'm just unsure of putting any kind of food on there in case one of the smaller ones can't figure out how to get up there right away.

Image

I've caught him at the leaf & flower bowls several times now, but can't tell if he's actually eating much or just checking them out. I'd planned to change them once a week, but I may move it up to twice a week so they get something new more often.

Image

Image

And today I surprised him when I opened the lid to check their food, and I found him like this.

I love it!! :D Especially the crab sitting at the tops of the column, he looks so funny perched up there.

I have a bunch of pics of different crabs sitting on that pillar! They love it and I love seeing them do it! I have a bunch of them at the top too. They kill me with the places they choose to hang out. Goofy little boogers.
