Crab not sleeping much - acting strange?

Post by SRRN74 » Sun Aug 02, 2015 4:42 pm

I have a crab who seems to wandering all over during the day and not sleeping like he used to. He is acting strange. Never going back to the moss pit he used to sleep in daily. Wandering around in the substrate or hanging off cholla wood that is almost vertical - for hours. This has been about 3 days now. I am not sure why. He doesn't seem to be eating much either. His closest friend just went down to molt about a week ago. Could that be the reason?

Also, another one just came up from a molt 4 days before his friend went down and took his old shell. They seem to get along just fine. No fighting but they never sleep together like the other two did. Crab #4 has been down molting for about 2 weeks. So right now there is only 2 above substrate and the newly molted guy is super active and all over the place .

We purchased 4 crabs in the beginning of June and was happy about the successful molt but now that 2 more are down, I am wondering if my lone non-molting crab is having social issues or is thinking about molting, or possibly sick. About 2 weeks ago he was in a new shell daily until he finally found a new one he liked. He also has one tip of a claw that is cut off. It doesn't affect him in anyway. He was always my sleep all day, party at night guy. The leader of the group. And now he is just bumming it around all the time.

And honestly, I can't believe I am this concerned over his behavior but I know you all appreciate where I am coming from. :D

Oh and they have salt and fresh water, 7 inches of sand/coconut moss substrate in a 30 gallon tank, humidity and temp always good. New food nightly with lots of variety. About 13 shells in a shell pit.
