Crab Group Sound
I want to know if anyone has ever experienced this. It happened around 3:30 am and I was working late and went into the living room to hang out. I keep a UV on the tank to simulate moonlight and i could see the food bowl clearly. There were 4 crabs in the food bowl, 3 close together and 1 on the outer rim as though he wanted to join them. The house was completely quiet and then I heard the most peculiar noises. It sounded not like frogs or crickets but something in between and it was in unison and last about 15-20 seconds but it was a constant light grown they seemed to do all at once and then I saw the outer crab back off. I scrambled for my cell phone after it ended in hope of catching more of the sound but all I got was a nice group photo of the crabs in the bowl but no further noise like that. I have since not heard anything else and i am just wondering if anyone else ever heard something similar? I can tell when they are scratching the glass or clanking their shells against glass but this was a very unique sound and in unison as though using their gills to draw air in and out or something. Anyway would love to hear anyone's responses.

They do chirp when they get upset. Sounds like yours had a scuffle over the food dish! Most of the time they only make noise when they're scared or being attacked, but some do it for no reason, some do it while molting, others do it just to communicate. It is an odd sound like you described.

Wow! Nice! Yes it did seem as though the 3 were upset with the smaller loner crab trying to enter. The 3 were medium size. The smaller crab eventually got his turn when the other 3 left.wodesorel wrote:They do chirp when they get upset. Sounds like yours had a scuffle over the food dish! Sometimes crabs just chirp, but usually it is a distress signal.
