Haha crazy holidays! I have been a total slacker I love new guy already! I'm so glad I found their post about him. Who can say no to a free hermit crab??? They almost 'set him free' but figured he'd die so it looks like the crab and I were both lucky!

I also got a bunch of shells from deltona!

Here's a quick look at the updated tank!!
ImageImageImageImageImageImage
Sorry about all the pics but I was so super excited! And so are my crabs! They have been checking out all the new shells! I'm excited to see who changes into what! And I can't wait to see some one use those magnaturals! I'm so excited about themselves! They are much lighter than I would have thought. And I don't mind the magnet outside the tank either.
Here's one mystical fogger shot lol

OMG I need magnaturals now too! How have I not looked into these before?! So jealous.

Crabbies are pretty active tonight, for once. Of course my large dug down, after I ordered 10 shells for him. What a jerk.

My tank is slowly being infested with fruit flies, and while I know they're not harmful they gross me out. I have a glass of apple cider vinegar on the lid with a couple drops of dish soap, but so far only have caught 1. I'm not sure what else to do next. Stupid bugs. I've been feeding dried foods to try and get rid of them, but nope. They're persistent.

Oh someone posted this

I haven't tried them yet but I want to. They said they just kept the trap tape up high where the crabs couldn't get and they have never had an issues and they work great. I need to get those soon.

Ooh, good idea with the tape traps. I'll have to do some rearranging in my tank so the crabs can't get to it, so that can be my next project.

I finally got aquarium gravel glued all over the sides of the SW pool I'm setting up, so after it's cured in a couple days I'll be able to get it into the tank. And now, after all my work, they probably won't touch it ;)

I wonder where you're gonna put the traps! My crabs have recently taken to climbing on the screen lid. If I had this problem I'd be in serious trouble bc there isn't a spot in the tank they can't reach!

They will probably EVENTUALLY use the water pools :) I've been frustrated lately bc I've just never seen a crab in my pools. And then I walked in on this. Image
It's like she knew lol. I'm not sure how far she went in, half of her was dripping wet but when you least expect it they surprise you with a quick dip!

I hate the glare but oh well. It was funny watching her try and get out of this position lol.

Moon, you're not supposed to have a favorite crab. Your others will be jealous.

Mine climb on the darn screen lid too, so I have to probably take the tank down to the bare minimum so they can't get to the tape. I'm sure there will be major rioting, but as long as the cork round stays they'll be a little happier ;)

So, for my SW pool I made a ramp of needlepoint canvas with rive rocks siliconed on. It's obviously flimsy, which I'm okay with, but any tips for how to reinforce it? I was going to use eggcrate instead but can't justify $13 for something I only need a tiny piece of.

You're right Meg! Bob gave me the "Waaaaait! What about meeeee?" look after I posted that. Squirt might be put out with me too. I'll spoil them and they'll get over it haha!

Crazy crabs! Of course they're going to riot! Buuuut it's for their own good so oh well lol. In the long run I'll think they'll thank you for it. Cork rounds are a great way to stay in their good graces.

About the pools.... The obvious suggestion is egg crate but I'm like you. I can't justify $13 for egg crate when you're going to need so little of it.... Have you looked at maybe acrylic rods or something? People have used them to reinforce plexi glass lids. I'm assuming they would be inexpensive and would probably hold up for a while. I'll keep brainstorming!

So I just got back from 4 nights away from home. I think my crabs threw a party while I was away. I now have 8 crabs up and only one of the 8 seems the slightest bit shy.

They are all like...
"dang, she back"
"ignore her, she'll go away again"
"please, I had the run of the tank, I am not going to start hiding now"

Can someone please tell me who came in an messed with my crabs while I was away?

I've been in Barbados for the past 2 weeks, I leave tomorrow can't wait to see what my tank looks like. I hope I don't have any losses :/
I had the lamp and humidifier on a timer and filled their leaf and flower pits up and planted some beans and chia seeds. Also filled their food dish to the brim with dry foods... I'm hoping that I'll only come home to moldy food lol. Fingers crossed!

My new pools will have an incline made of siliconed river rocks to help the guys get in/out (as if -- they only stand on the edge and dip their feet in  ) but the current tank pools are accessed via needlepoint canvas ramps. In order to make them sturdier, I doubled the plastic layers before wedging the end under the loose river rocks. Of course, none of my crabs are too big and wouldn't collapse even a single layer ramp but, with larger crabs, try the double layers.
