She had owned him for 2 years and he wasn't in great condition - no saltwater, commercial diet, etc. He dug down immediately and molted, but I rarely see him. He comes up every once in a while to stuff his face, and then reburies. I grabbed some pics before he disappears again.

We've had a lovely family of four baseball-size PPs, who all get along well. Last week we got a phone call from a pet store with six medium-large PPs, asking if we wanted them, as there were no buyers interested in hermies of that size. Got to the store within hours, but one of the crabs was already dead ... odly, he was torn limb from limb . Another was half dead; regrettably, we could not take him home. Of the four we did take home, two have died (within a week). Both dead ones had claws and legs scattered around their bodies. We've been keeping the newcomers in a separate crabitat from the original family of four, but both tanks are set up exactly the same way, according to all the specifications we have learned from your website. Same food, etc, as well. Do you think the largest crab in the new group could be killing and canibalizing his tank-mates? I'm going to separate the two survivors from this group (interestingly they are the largest two), but I need to know if anyone else has had this happen. It's SCARY

P.S. They have access to lots of shells (we live five minutes from the beach), so it's not a shell fight. Don't know what to think.Image

Can you believe they were out of the Cajun spice when I went yesterday? Despicable.

It's not uncommon for crabs to drop all their limbs due to stress before dying. So as gruesome as the scene may look, it doesn't always mean there was an attack. Another possibility is a bad surface molt. In that case you might find exo skeleton all over the place and a crab still in it's shell. Now if you didn't find any limbs at all or just 1 or 2 then cannabalism is a possibility. Just make sure your remaining 2 are getting lots of protein, calcium and vitamin rich foods like honey bee pollen and coconut. That should give them the strength to pull through!

Moonbeam, our hermies lean up against EACH OTHER! No one of them EVER sleeps alone. They particularly love cozying up together in the moss pit Image Image

Thank you!! I have 2 almost identical-sized crabs in banded tapestries, so I always have to triple-check who it is. I love when they pick pretty shells.

Oooh, I love the third from the left! What a beautiful rich color. And what the heck, you have 4 PPs and not one is in a turbo shell!? Your guys are rebels.

Also check with your local healthfood type stores for bee pollen; I know mine carries bulk stuff like bee pollen and it's relatively cheap. Saves on shipping, too. :) A bunch of sellers on Etsy sell it too. Lots of options!
