Not digging into substrate? Mobbing
Not digging into substrate? Mobbing
after recently changing my cypress bedding to a nice coco fiber sand mix I am confused to see that my hermitcrabs aren't happily digging in as they normally would. should I be concerned? did I do something wrong? It's damp soft and a good four inches of bedding. Another thing that concerns me it that my hermitcrabs seem to all go to the same hiding spot no matter what one crab finds a spot and all others fallow. I don't think it's a shell scarcity problem because their tank is packed full of new liveable homes. Input to their behavior? Thank you

Re: Not digging into substrate? Mobbing
It may just take them a bit to adjust to the change. I do suggest you up the depth to at least 6 inches. This will ensure that their tunnels and caves are stable and lessens the chance of crabs stumbling upon other molting crabs underground. As long as conditions are correct, I wouldn't wouldn't worry about their hiding. They sometimes pile up in a favorite spot. But if they're constantly piling up next to a heat source, double check temps. Does your crabitat have a lot of cover (fake plants, branches, etc)? I notice they'll be out more, "hiding" in plain view when there is a lot of cover.
Re: Not digging into substrate? Mobbing
Yes I do have drift wood a large fake plant and a medium sized cave I fit as much cover as I can in there tank as I can so that they still have walking space. Unfortunately I cracked my last tank trying to sanitize it
. So I had to size down I have three ping pong sized crabs and one dime sized crab ind one tank and one missing a leg in a small isolation tank. I guess it's just a favorite hiding spot but I'm going to try to up the tank size as soon as I get the money. Thank you for the response
