Exotic Temperaments?

Post by Drakezilla » Wed Nov 05, 2014 8:02 pm

Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone could tell me the basic temperaments of exotics in the terms of easily frightened, aggression, how they get along with other crabs or humans, etcetera. Especially for Straws, Violas, Indos and Blues? I'd like to get some in the future with color and i just want to be sure of what I'm getting and I can't seem to find a consensus on anything but E's!

Please and thank you~

I've read such mixed reviews! I wanted to mix straws, blues and pps, but I've got no idea how to get blues.

I can only chime in on the E's and straws. E's are so much fun to watch, however they are total scaredy cats! If you spook one they run away backwards into the nearest hiding spot. They are really fast and have no respect for another crabs personal space at all lol.
Straws are really laid back. I got 3 last month and 1 was a little lethargic just staying in the same place for days. The other two did a ton of exploring but dug down and now the lethargic one is exploring. They don't seem as territorial as E's and PP's who will push each other out of the way at the food dish. Straws wait their turn or grab some food and run

I have only had violas and an indo for a couple days but so far my violas are a little more shy, but great climbers. And my indo is Huge!! He just kinda pushes he way around everywhere.
All kinds of crabby!

Exotic Temperaments?

I can't remember where I read it and I can't find it now (of course) but yesterday I came across a thread that said violas are more nocturnal and not really social (?). Blues are apparently much friendlier and out and about throughout day and night. It was a recent thread. I'll continue looking.

Exotic Temperaments?

All right! Thank you!! Do you think the PPs would be instigating fights against the blues and straws?

My PPs don't mess with my straws at all. Maybe because the straws are so docile and just kind of keep out if everyone's way. However when my E's (who are both smaller than most of my PP's) climb on top of a PP or just get in the way my big PPs don't hesitate to push, shove, or even smack one out of the way with their BP. The E's have a great "brush it off" attitude and just find another route to go on about their business.

My pp is probably going to come out of his molt a jumbo this time. He's very docile to humans, I hope that translates well to other crabs!

Straws are rare but not impossible to find. Blues on the other hand....other than LHC does anyone know where to get some?

moonbeam I didn't think she was doing blues.
We will offer 5 different species of Hermit Crabs ~ Straws ~ Violas~ Indos~ Ruggies~ & E's.

That's what she said but I don't know what she decided, I think someone mentioned about her selling blues, but I think she had already decided on her supplier.

You can also check out this website and see if any stores near you can get them for you, but with blues you may end up getting violas or a different species so be careful. But you may be surprised at how many stores could potentially order them for you.

I spoke with Segrest farms with their sales consultant. She said people were saying that she was sending the wrong blues. After me sending her lots of pics and her emailing back and forth she now knows what the difference is and is thrilled since she knows everyone will be getting the right hermits.
