An Escape Artist! - Cause for Concern?

Post by crabswell » Sun Jan 25, 2015 10:35 pm

Hi all! More than a week now with my two new crabbies - Dr. Samuel Crabson and James Crabswell - and some new developments. Up to now, Dr. Crabson had been a bit crabby  - quite skittish, not much activity or eating, rarely out and about, unable to climb without falling. But last night he emerged immediately after lights-out (before Crabswell, for the first time) and spent a lot of time eating (which was a great relief. The mango must have been too good to refuse). He then got up to a bit of trouble, climbing on all the plants and trying to get behind the coconut fibre backing to the crabitat (those flat decorative sheets). He finally got back there and was stuck for a while, so I put him back into the crabitat proper to explore and left it at that. This early-evening, assuming him to be buried in his hut, I went into the tank to add food and make some adjustments. Noticing that the coconut backsplash was loose, I went to fix it and found the Doctor behind it  , very close to the top of the tank. I removed him again and he IMMEDIATELY (instead of running to hide) came back to his previous corner and began climbing the background sheet (making it to the top pretty darn quickly). Now I couldn't tell if he was trying to get to the backside of the coconut sheet or was trying to escape (tapping the glass) - but should I be concerned? I've since cut the height of the sheet down half the size, but a determined crab can do an awful lot in an evening. Also, could this be a sign of unhappiness :| :( ? or exploration? I've added a few more things for him to climb throughout the tank (and he seems to have taken to them as well pretty quickly), but I feel like he really wanted to (and still does want to) get behind the backing to hide). Is this bad? Could he get seriously stuck or injured? His newfound energy has taken me aback, so I could use a bit of advice!

Thanks!!

For your entertainment. His speedy ascension this evening (I took off the lid to retrieve him):

Sounds like Dr. Crabson is a kindred spirit of Big Enzo's  . My big guy does the whole checking-the-lid-for-escape-routes on a nightly basis. He'll get up to the top via the crocheted net, the vines or the fish net and will work his way around three sides of the tank along the corner guards. Until I figured out he was strong enough to push up the plastic flap at the back of the glass lid, he managed to get out twice (twice!) but was still on top of the outside of the tank when I captured him both times. Now that the flap is taped down onto the rear edge of the tank, he can't escape but still has high hopes. Silly crab :hlol: . What they're both doing is perfectly normal: crabs climb, crabs explore. That cocomat has a very pleasing texture to crabby toes so, as long as there's no way Dr. Crabson can move the tank lid to effect an escape, don't worry and let him enjoy his escapades.

Oh Crabinski! You're always the first to quell my concerns - must be the kindred spiritness of our mischievous crabbers :hlol: . I'll be sure to secure the lid. You seem to absolutely right about the cocomat. The Doc's obsessed with the new little bridges I've made out of it. Just to confirm, though: if he gets stuck behind the back wall of cocomat, do you think he'd be alright without me immediately intervening? Thanks again, and a big hello to Big Enzo!

He won't get stuck -- he'll just eventually move down the back of the mat to substrate level. If the cocomat is near the UTH, he may just be going to a cosier spot for a while. Shy Harry's favorite spot in the 29g to date is either on the fish net against the UTH wall or behind the castle against the UTH wall. I've seen my crabs in incredible positions, seemingly tangled in the fish net or behind the crocheted net and want to "rescue" them but they always manage to extricate themselves no worse for the experience. Like his namesake, Dr. Crabson is an enterprising individual with many resources at hand. Anyway, Mr. Crabwell will always come to his rescue.

I agree with everyone else. Sometimes all 7 of my PPs are behind the coconut wall of my 29 gallon tank. They just sit on top of each other and sometimes even climb on the roof of the tank (Mesh Lid.) Do not worry 1 bit.

The bottom of the cocomat is currently buried under substrate, to keep it in place; would it be better for it to have more points of escape (perhaps have a 1/2 inch gap)? I should let them problem solve a bit more. They've managed to get unstuck countless times already - just have to remind myself.

He's too busy watching and recording.... though always nearby.

Welcome to the world or an adjusting crabbie. His antics mean he is feeling more at home. Enjoy :D
