We got our 4 yesterday, and once in the tank they all hid right away. I think 2 of them might have dug down. This morning I went to look in on them, and I see one of them eating. As soon as she saw me though, she ran and "hid." I guess she doesn't like to be watched while eating.

They usually are pretty shy until after their first molt with you. They often suffer from PPS (post purchase syndrome) and need lots of time to adjust. In the wild, they are pray to birds. I find, if I approach the tank from below rather than above, it's easier to spy on them. They don't seem to get spooked that way. I think shadows from overhead freak them out. Congrats on your new crabs!!!

@Lburns is right: overhead shadows really freak the crabs out, probably reminiscent of a bird swooping down. I sneak up on the tank from the side, talking to whoever I see on the surface as I approach, just so they hear my voice and know that the "Monster Hand" may appear in the crabitat soon, bearing food .

I'll try to be mindful of my shadow. The top of the tank is only chest high to me, so my height is a disadvantage I think. I caught the one on top of the castle when I was changing out food. I hope she can get down if she got up. I can't figure out how she got up there to begin with.
