HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hey guys!

Okay, here's the catch: as most of you know I got a new 60 gallon tank for my crabs in December and with the weather warming and the flooring done, I can finally get back to assembling it!

My mom is tired of having 3 tanks taking up space, so I've been given a deadline to have the tank up by the end of the week and now, my jumbo, Draco, who molted from October 20th -- December 21st of last year, has just buried himself again!! he dug a giant hole yesterday and covered himself over totally. Can he really be molting again so soon?!

I know he had a few tiny scrapes from his last molt, but would that really warrant another molt so fast?! I need to get him out of that tank and into the 60 so the babies can have it! Should I dig him up? I know you're never supposed to, but can't I just move him over really fast? DX

NEVER dig a crab up when you think its molting. It is posssible for your jumbo crab to molt again i rare cases if he didnt feel like the molt was comfortable enough, like you said, he had cuts and scrapes. He could also just have some stress if youve been moving the tank around. Just wait to see, just please dont dig him up, and your mom should know how important a crab under dirt is, whether its molting or to destress. Is there any way you can leave it alone? Or does your mom really not get it? I just dont want a dead crab in your hands.

If he JUST dug down he prob wont actually be molting yet. They sit around to make sure they're perfectly safe before shedding. I'd dig, with an emergency ISO ready, if he only dug down yesterday. 3 days or more i would leave him alone.
