Stronger than duct tape?

Post by CrazyCrab12 » Thu Jul 02, 2015 10:56 pm

So 4 years ago I came home from school to find a crab merrily settling on TOP of my 10 gal tank. The lid was closed and everything. I put him back as I though of a solution and I started duct taping the lid closed unless I was doing something in the tank. I thought everything was fine until tonight 4 years later. I now have a 45 gal and much larger crabs. I still have the lid taped closed 24/7, but tonight while washing the dishes, I heard a crackling sound coming from the tank. I ran over to see the duct tape slowly ripping apart as a crab was pushing up from the middle of the lid. (It was only taped in the two corners) my crab was stronger than duct tape! I now need a new way to keep the lid closed and I'm just praying they won't do it again while I'm asleep tonight. I ended up covering the lid in half a roll tonight instead of the normal two pieces. Does anyone have any suggestions on keeping them in the tank?

I've heard that FiberFix tape is stronger than duct tape. I haven't ever tried it since my crabbies aren't looking for means of escape. Maybe you could put something heavy on top of the tank but I'm not sure of your setup to know that that will work.

I use gorilla tape. The extra strong one.

#1 rule of crabbing - crabs are weird.

I have bricks sitting on top of my lids.

If it's a screen lid, lid clips!

This! They're not expensive and hold well. For larger tanks you may want two sets (4 clips).

I have the same problem. Maybe you should continue using duct tape or gorilla tape. But you might be nervous about using just that, I knew I would. But as well as the duct tape or GT you might consider adding a stack of books to the top of the tank or a few bricks. Then that should keep the crabbiness in. :)

It's not a screen lid, it's an aquarium hood. And the part that opens is slanted so setting anything ontop will just slide off.
