Filling in Hole With Shells

Post by Merckeral » Tue Jul 21, 2015 11:43 pm

Our first molt has just been successfully completed and we noticed the hole the hermit crab came out from.
Two days later, the crab seemed to have filled the hole with unused shells and there's now a depression of substrate of where the hole once was!

Is this normal behavior? Crabs filling in their old holes?

Sand gets moved all over the place by them pretty regularly. Typically as they dig down they'll fill in a hole behind them, but once they pop back out of the hole I don't think they deliberately fill it in. I think stuff just falls in there (like shells and more sand).
Crabbing since July 2014! 75 gallon with 12 Purple Pinchers.

Yeah, like meg said, Shells and such manage to get everywhere. I woke up this morning with half the shells buried.
