Crab moving shell

My hubby is taking care of my babies while I'm out of town. One crab keeps taking a particular shell out of the shell shop, dragging it to near the opening of one of the Coco huts then abandoning it. When he puts it back the crab takes it back to the same spot and walks away. Is this one of those crabs are weird situations?

How many shells does that crab have available that might fit? He might be hoarding the shell because he's afraid to lose it or about to change.
Sidenote: I'm somewhat new but I've seen it discussed on a few forums and I am just suggesting what I saw. So I'll wait for others to chime in too, to see what is suggested.

He might not be able to get the shell under the hut with him. Its a possibility that he wants to inspect it in privacy, in the shade, but can't seem to get it in there with him. Or as biggie said he's keeping it close to claim it when he's ready. My new crab does it, one in particular he pushes around the tank when he's ready to sleep for the day.

They have 8 shells of various sizes and types between the 2 of them. Mostly all turbos and pearl lined except 2. My crabs are both medium sized. I finally caught him in the act the other night and secretly watched. He is pushing that shell out and is trying on another shell near it. He then plays with the one he pushed out for awhile before moving on. Crabs are weird I guess!
