tunnels and digging
tunnels and digging
So after a month,my new guy finnaly comes out at night to do his crab activities instead of staying burried most of the time. Hes a lil larger and a different species than the other guys. Hes a strawberry. He seems to be making a underground network of tunnels. The question I have is what do I do about the topside holes? I dont want to cover them and accidentally bury him, but it is causing a problem as some of these tunnels and holes are dug right around water dishes and hideaway huts. My saltwater dish is kind of "teetering" at this point and may fall in. Should I cover these holes or leave it as is?? Ty

Straw's are diggers, so you will get used to the craters everywhere in your tank! For the most part, mine move the sand around so much that they cover there own holes, while making new ones. If it is just a hole they dug and went about their way topside, go ahead and smooth it out, but I wouldn't go crazy and fill everything in. It will usually work itself out.

So filling the substrate back under the water dish is ok? Thats only one im worried about. The other ones are fine, just dont want the dish to cave in on him. Ty for reply
Re: tunnels and digging
I filled in the hole that was causing the SW dish to tip. Just checked and made sure he wasn't there. Went to change the FW dish and there he was. No substrate was disturbed near it. I would never of guessed that was his current location.

Re: tunnels and digging
Crabs love to molt under the water dish,I believe it is because of the protective cover and the moisture. It can be a problem if they do molt directly underneath and are somewhat exposed near the surface because it is hard to make water changes.Just use a turkey baster to suck the old water out so as not to disturb the dish.
