Crab took dead crabs shell..

Post by greenecojr » Sun Jun 12, 2016 2:43 pm

So my hermit crab Lucky recently died, we had him for about 2 years. And we had our other hermit crab Speedy for maybe 3 or 4 years. Speedy lived longer than both Lucky and the one before Lucky Shiny. However, once we cleaned the shell and put it back into the tank to honor the death, speedy hopped in luckys old shell... Could speedy have killed lucky. :crabblush:

When Lucky died how did he look? Was he torn in pieces? Was his shell stolen? If so then I would say yes but if not then it could be something like this…

I have a crab that sniffs out anything new I put in the tank. He's like a detective. It could be s shell or hidy spot etc and he will be the first one to sniff it out. If it's a shell he will put it on, if he fits in it and wear it for hours and then usually go back to his green turbo. Its like he has to put his smell on it first. Lol

I don't know what your tank conditions are like or what your shell situation is, but he probably just put the shell on because he liked it.

Often in the wild, crabs will line up and have a chain reaction shell swap.

Anytime new shells are introduced into my tanks, there are changes.

We have a good 6 or so shells. But Speedy just took Luckys shell after he died.
