In my crabitat I have two terracotta pots half buried in the substrate, the bigger one can hold a small plant and the smaller one is about the size of coffee mug. Two of my hermit crabs, Slowbro and Jamarcus, have both changed their shells 2 different instances at 2 different times in my smaller terracoota pot and left their old shell half buried. Is this normal behavior? I don't think there was a shell fight since Slowbro is about twice the size of Jamarcus.
I've been considering moving the pot or digging it up a little bit because the hole on the back of pot keeps getting covered with dirt and I'm afraid that my crabs might try molting in it since its small, dark, and cave-like. But its such a popular spot that I don't want to change it unless there's something wrong

Crabs will change shells wherever the shells happen to be. If you're worried about possible disputes, you can use multiple shell shops for different size shells. I keep all my shells together and have had more than one crab trying on shells in the basket at the same time with no problems.

I have shells laying all over the crabatat, and I will change them regularly often, I have collected 40 shells, I keep 20 in the tank at all times, but it's fun to change them out and move them around because my crabbies will go to them one by one flipping them around and looking at each one, my smallest crabby even buried a really big one, I'm assuming he liked it, but it's way to big for him right now. Lol they sure are entertaining

Re: Crabs changing shells in same spot?
Mine used to leave all the shells on the ground half buried. It was getting tedious to clean the sand out so much so I bought a corner shower caddy and put all the shells in there. They can move the shells they don't want out of their way, and I know they can change shells in there because Edd changed into a pearl turbo shell and then changed back to whatever kind of shell he's currently in. It keeps them less sandy.

I have two shell shops that are off the sub, one is in a shower caddy, the other on a lizard hammock. Then I have a few strewn about on the sub, some in a pile in a corner on the sub and then another shop inside the built in food bowl on the rock cave(which penny has claimed as her own outhouse/sleeping hole) they bury shells about halfway, so far I haven't had any disappear underground. Lots of sand in shells though
