Possible Death?
Just curious if it is common for hermit crabs to dig themselves a small hole to die in. I came upstairs to my room where my tank was tonight and my one larger crab was just sitting by its food dish out if his shell (not naked) and so I went up to check him out and normally just my presence close to the tank spooks him back inside his shell, but there was no reaction. I came a bit closer, and still nothing. Finally I flicked the glass beside him (he was quite close to it) and it made a good audible sound, and still no movement. I turned off the lamp and decided to wait to see if he's moved by the morning, but I have a bad feeling. Any insight would be appreciated.

Doesn't sound great. If there are other crabs in the tank, and there is a chance he is alive, I would ISO.

What are your tank conditions? Crabs dig themselves holes all the time to hang out it.
It may be destressing.
