Salt water bubbler

Post by annedow9 » Tue Apr 25, 2017 8:20 am

In my new tank I added Fresh and Salt Water Bubblers. The SW is creating a salt deposit on the glass. I've even cut down on the amount of salt per gallon. Is this normal?

I don't know about the deposit, but I do know that some folks just put the bubblers in their fresh water pools. Personally, I wouldn't cut down on the amount of salt per gallon in the saltwater bath - the crabs use the full strength marine saltwater and mix their own shell water from the freshwater and saltwater. The crabs may reduce the salinity (saltiness) by mixing the two waters inside their shells, but I'd let them be in charge of that. My two cents. :)

The thing you have to be careful with is if your bubblers spray out water onto the sub, overtime you could start a flood in the bottom of your tank.

I use a bubbler in my msw I haven't had problems.. Do you have anything in the bottom? I have a rock and a slide proof bottom. Don't know if it helps though

I would not cut down on the salt strength either.

If you have overspray there is a little valve you can purchase cheaply that you can attach to the line and reduce the air pressure.

Just wipe the salt off the glass with a damp paper towel.

Overspray is common if common if you have a too strong of an airpump. The water will evaporate but the salt doesn't, leaving the crystals behind. Using a valve like soilentgrings said will help reduce overspray.

This is not helpful BUT I LOVE THAT SHELL ON YOUR CRABBIE :)
I too get salt build up, i scratch it off when it gets thick. The crabs completely ignore it and although its ugly its appears to be harmless. Please someone let me know if im incorrect in my assessment. So far ive been lucky and nothing bad has befallen my colony.

The directions called for 1/2 cup to 1 gallon water. Your two cents is welcome I'm new at this.

1/2 cup Per US gallon is correct. If you need smaller measurements, you could do 1/8 c per quart. 1 quart is pretty much the same as a liter (1.05 quart = 1 liter). Don't forget to add the Prime (or similar). Prime is 1 drop per 2 liters. I used to fill a container with 2 liters of water, treat with Prime, then add salt to 1 of those liters.

EDIT: Usually I use 2 drops Prime per 2 liters instead of 1 drop to be on the safe side.

Thank you I have another question:) I bought 2 pieces of tempered glass for the top and they fit really tight. Will the bubblers be enough to give the tank oxygen?
