hermit crab chirping?

Post by Brian_T » Thu May 04, 2017 10:06 am

Last night I added some new shells. My smallest and most active crab was investigating the shells and appeared to be making a noise, though not quite a chirp, it's kind of hard to describe. It sounded sort of like when your stomach growls when your hungry. I watched pretty carefully and it did not appear he was scraping the shell or moving it to make the sound. It did look like he was trying to get at some of the remnants of salt water left from boiling the shells.

Has anyone else observed anything like this?

Mine would make like a little grunting/croaking noise if I got too close to his hideout (behind the cocowall) - such a little brat! Lol!

Mine chirp for different reasons also - I walked into my crab room the other day and one of my straws fell from the cork bark the, and he was chirping when he/she was getting upright again. It was almost as though he was cursing me out like I scared him/her. I apologized of course. Sometimes I hear chirping in my tanks, and see nothing going on. My e's are pretty vocal though. As long as nothing appears wrong, it's all good.

They do make a variety of noises for different reasons, I've noticed.

Mine can be pretty chatty at times but it's fairly easy to distinguish a distress sound from a regular day to day "conversation". Only once have I heard one of my ladies warn her gf to back off after they went down for a molt together. They quickly resolved it themselves though.

Mine will sometimes make soft, shrill noises that sound very similar to my bf's birds, which confused him when he spent the night.

I also recently got a couple of male PPs, one of whom would talk to himself all night long, until I handed him over to my ladies lol.

Everyone's been pretty quiet the last few days though. We've had a house guest all week so everyone becomes a bit more shy.

Is it bad if my crabs don't chirp? I've never heard them make a sound other than their shells clanking against things or them being too adventurous and falling off things.

Oh man! The first time I heard a crab chirp was when I got my E's. They were having a shell fight because one had this pitiful half broken nerite on and was attempting to take his buddies shell. I thought there was a weird frog in my house!

I would say Rolo is the most talkative. But she/he is very active, when above sand Rolo is climbing everywhere, even over Malibu and Curlz! Rolo will push other crabs out of the way for food or water.

And one time! Malibu had been under for about a week and Rolo decides to dig her up, Mal was lethargic for 2 days and then as I was at a friends, I texted my mom telling her to check on them, bc I was worried, she found that Malibu had molted above the surface! All because Rolo had to take her spot and not ANYWHERE else.
But yeah, Rolo chirps CONSTANTLY. Crazy Crabby!
Sophia aka "Eggs"
Four PPs, Rio, Rolo, Curlz and Malibu in a 40 gallon
May they rest in peace- Mango- 1/13/17 and Stefanio- 1/10/17

Did you name your crab Curlz after the crabber who was successful at raising zoea? LOL that is what I think about every time I see that.

Well, kinda. When we got her and Rolo from the pet store, we first picked out Rolo. And then the employee who was kindly helping us, said "There might be some in here." and picked up this nice log that they had and SHOOK IT! I looked surprised but didn't say a word, I picked Curlz from there and ever since then she has been so shy, I originally was going to call her Curls because when ever you look at her she curls up in her shell, I saw Curlz's thread and decided to spell it with a z!
