So my husband has renamed our PPs The Weather Bugs. Big Mama and Surfi aren't much for climbing. Surfi will explore on occasion (especially if there are new shells to try on. She loves to go shopping!) But Big Mama just kinda stays in her little dugout (we call it her lazy boy. She's like the old granny who doesn't do much but lets everyone know she's the boss - hence the name). So 2 days ago, I found Big Mama (quite literally) hanging out at the very top of the wood piece we call "the tree," and Surfi hanging in the branch just under her. They never leave the ground. My E's are always all over the place, and especially love to be up high like jungle cats, so I didn't think much of them. I just found it odd that no one even came down to eat (fresh banana and mealworms are their favorite!). 2 days - everyone in the tree, food untouched. Then, last night, a big storm rolled through. Flash flood warnings and all. They stayed up there all day again (haven't come down for fresh coconut or ground freeze dried crickets - second favorite - yet) and now I'm hearing thunder.
Is this their instincts kicking in? Can they feel the pressure change or something, know the rain is coming so they go for high ground? Anyone else's crabs do this?

Re: Weather bugs
Kind of hard to see in this picture, but had to share. This is just so fascinating to me! It's currently POURING down rain outside, and these 4 are literally climbing over each other to try and get to the highest spot! (Only one of them was smart enough to go another way to get ABOVE the net to be on top. Haha! But he hangs out up there a lot anyway, so he knew.) Maybe he told them? Like, "Hey y'all, there's a flood comin'! Grab a 6 pack and your comfy shell and come on up! Party at my place tonight!"

Re: Weather bugs
A few things. So, last year when the hurricane came through practically every crab I had was on the branches way above ground. Other crabbers in hurricane Matthew's path experienced the same thing. Yes, they do feel the pressure. Pretty cool huh?
Secondly, I have used fish net all of my crabbing years. I've never had issues- BUT- I only single layer it. Another crabber on here double layered hers like you did and her crabs have gotten caught up in it. She said she had to cut them out. I recommend that you only single layer the fish net. Cut it so that it fits to the size you need.

Thanks! I just put it in there and kind of wondered about that. It seemed sturdier double layered because it's wide and so stretchy, so I've been keeping a very close eye on it/them. I'll cut it in a minute when I get a second.GotButterflies wrote:A few things. So, last year when the hurricane came through practically every crab I had was on the branches way above ground.
