Our first shell change!

Post by krbrown2000 » Sat Sep 30, 2017 4:52 am

Hi,

My 10-year-old son and I are still relative newbies to hermit crabs. We've had ours for maybe six months. Our two have been tunneling for a while, so we haven't seen them very much. And we've never had one of them switch shells, though we keep a variety of shells in the tank.

So we decided to run to the pet store yesterday. While we were there, we saw a kind of medium-sized crab in this tiny little shell. He was just hanging out of it, because he couldn't even get a third of himself all the way in the shell. He looked pitiful and like he needed rescuing. So we brought him home. We put him in the tank, he crawled around for a minute and immediately switched shells! It was fascinating to watch. Within five minutes of being in his new surroundings, he was in a new, bigger shell!

We were so excited to give the poor guy a better chance, and a better life.

And now, one of our other guys we've had for several months decided to change shells too! It's like he needed instructions or something, lol. We've been waiting so long for one shell change, and we get two in one day!
