HCA: Hermit Crab Association

I have a camera set up to watch my hermit. After running thru a 24 hour video I noticed my hermit spent 60 mins eating, going to the salt water and then right back to same spot and sitting there for the rest of the 23 hours. Is it normal that he’s not active?

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? I have the fluckers all natural sand mixture for crabs. It’s about 5 inches deep right now been slowly add some bc I have one crab that’s been buried for a week.

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read? Yes, they usually read between 74-78F and between 78 82 Humidity.

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
I have a UTH that covers the back of the tank above the substrate.

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
I have fresh water pool that is treated with a dechlorinator. And a salt water poo that is treated also. The brand is zoo med.

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced? Right now they are eating a shrimp mix and Organic apples and carrots until my order from the healthy hermit crab comes in. I replace it every night

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known? I’ve had the crabs for about 3 weeks. They are purple pinchers.

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen? I have one crab that’s been buried for about two weeks and that I’m hoping is molting.

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing? They are in a ten gallon tank, with a mesh lid that I covered in Saran Wrap. Getting ready to upgrade to a 20 gallon long. Not sure when to do it since the other one is still buried.

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they? I have one small and one medium crab.

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any? Their are 10 extra shells in the tank.

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently? No

12. How often do you clean the tank and how? Haven’t cleaned it yet besides removing food debris.

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned? No sponges

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently? No

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail. Not sure if it’s a emergency, but I just don’t think my medium crab is very active. Seems to just stay in one spot most of the time and even on the video camera he only moved around for one hour at night.
