Bully crab

Post by Brian_T » Fri Jul 09, 2021 6:16 pm

My biggest crab is being a big bully. I just watched him roll both my other two crabs out of a coconut hide.

Competition for resources can be very intense in a captive situation. These are wild animals used to wandering for miles every night; being confined in a small space with other crabs creates intense competition. Especially if you don't have a lot of other possible places to hide, that coco hut is an extremely valuable resource.

I have a crab, Shell Jacker, that refused to get along with any other crabs. I moved him from tank to tank to see if he could be friends with different colonies. Nope! He's about the size of a golf ball, so I put him in the tank of big crabs. They are the size of oranges and bigger! He couldn't bully them. They took him right in and now he's happy and thriving! All crabs have different personalities. I agree, fights over limited resources can be a factor, but that's not always the case. Some crabs just have dominant personalities and need to be in a colony that they can find their place in the pecking order.

There's a other coconut hide right next to that one. He just prefers that particular one.

I'll probably go buy some coconuts tomorrow and make some new ones. I'll bet all the crabs will prefer fresher coconuts.
