Dead hermit - had weird behavior before death

Post by Avashermits » Wed Mar 15, 2023 7:17 pm

Hey! I'm new here.
Recently one of my four hermit babies died and I noticed he had some very strange behavior before he died. I was wanting to know if anyone with more hermit owner experience knew what happened.

I had him in my tank for about six months and he never molted (he was also a pretty small crab so I thought this was strange). All of my other hermits have safely molted more than once in my tank. Then about a month ago I noticed one too many empty shells on the surface of my substrate. The shell that he had been in was left of the surface too. I thought that maybe he had just changed shells and I hadn't noticed (because I didn't count how many extra shells I had put in the shell shop). Suddenly I started seeing random pieces of exo skeleton popping up on the surface. My other hermits were on the surface too. Finally yesterday I decided to investigate and I found him dead and shell-less in the substrate. I dug a little more and found no shell with him, he had buried himself without a shell.

Does anyone have any idea as to what might have been going on with him?

Hi there. Sorry to hear about your hermit. 6 months for a smaller guy is a long time to go without molting. If conditions are right, he should have molted at some point. If you'd like, you can fill out the emergency form so we can get a better look into your tank conditions.

Also, crabs go through a lot in the pet trade before we get them. Sometimes there's nothing we can do to help them, even once we put them in good conditions with good food.
