ripping up sponges

Post by Guest » Mon Oct 08, 2007 3:52 pm

I got two sponges that look like beach balls. they are being ripped to shreds.

Also, last nite I watched my new guy sitting on a bridge. Its up against the tank so its one way. One of the other crabs came up to look at him. I guess he didn't like this because he gave him a poke and knocked him right off the bridge. Ha!

Perhaps they were thinking of that last round of Marco Polo they lost :smt044 :sign5: :confused5: [smilie=joke.gif] Never seen that happen before. Obviously they might prove useful as Consumer Digest testers... LOL

Heh, I have those same sponges. I use one in my fresh water bowl, and a natural sponge in my salt water bowl. My other sponge that came with that package I just leave on the sand. One of my crabs, Coral, loves to push it around and it seems like she has a good time with it. :P

As for the bridge incident, it probably isn't because your crab didn't like the other one, it's because hermit crabs can't comprehend moving around something so well, and it was just trying to get through.

A long time ago I rememer seeing one of my crabs carrying a sponge around like a ball so thats why i liked the idea of these beach ball sponges but nobody seems to be carrying these, just biting!

I see crabs climb over each other all the time but this seemed intentional to hit him down. Who knows.

I didn't have much to watch at all last nite. I walked in on the end stages of a shell change but thats it. One guy is having some sort of shell changing frenzy. He can't make up his mind. I Never know what shell he is going to be in when I look in the tank.

Eating the sponges is actually pretty normal. I think this may be part of the reason bad pet stores tell you that you just need a sponge for water. They must watch crabs eating it and figure they were drinking, too. Hermies will sample just about anything you put near them that smells edible, sponges are no different. If they happen to like the taste or the sponge has something they need, you'll be replacing these a lot.
