Chirping was a warning?

Post by Guest » Tue Oct 23, 2007 7:21 pm

Gilligan was playing on the netting near the screen and my sister came over to take a peek at my new family members. As we neared the tank we heard chirping (she'd never heard her crabs chirp before). It continued and I couldn't tell where it was coming from. Well, after she left and I neared the tank to freshen the water and food I heard it again. Darned if it wasn't Gilligan chirping at me! It was almost like a warning to back off and leave him be so he could play some more.... Anyone with similar experiences... I feel so dissed :(

Yeah, sometimes they do that when they feel threatened. It happened when I introduced a newbie into a tank, then the usual pushing and shoving occurred, then the inquisitive prodding, then they got along well a week later.

A long time ago, a local pet shop got a new shipment of hermits, and right out of the burlap sack they were chirping as the shopowners picked them up...oh yeah, that was the first time I saw them shipped direct from the wholesaler...the burlap sack was an eye opener for me, to say the least.

I was doing a water change and headcount of my crabs a couple of weeks ago -- we had had a few deaths during a mass-molt. As I was juggling dishes and food and climbies I heard chirping, and when I looked in the tank I saw that all my Es had stampeded to the opposite side of the tank from where I was working and one was using the little chirper as a step-stool .
I rescued him from where he was trapped under one crab, and between the glass and a hidey; but a few minutes later he was chirping again because someone *else* was using him as a step-stool  .

I think he'll try to be on top next time :).

I just had my new baby hermie chirp at me today. I kept thinking everyone was crazy when they were saying hermies chirp. Guess I'm crazy now too. I've never had such a witchy crab before. Everyone else did fine when brought home. [smilie=dunno.gif] Hopefully the more I handle her, her attitude will change.

She is a pretty little thing. I will be posting some pics of her in the Picture forum, if you want to see her.
