Is this normal??

Post by Guest » Fri Oct 26, 2007 5:07 pm

I went shopping for more shells today, and brought some home. Washed them out, let them dry and then put them in the tank. I left my room for about an hour to cook dinner and eat, and come back to check on the tank (I just got one of those lids with the bulb fixtures, so I have a DayGlo and MoonGlo bulb in there, wanted to make sure it wasn't overheating them)....and lo and behold, Tornado Norm's old shell is laying atop the substrate, empty. I thought oh h*ll...I have a nekkid crab somewhere...went to move the shells around...and ta da!! He'd picked one of the brand new shells out and had taken up residence in it!!! Is this normal???

100% normal, yes. :) Crabs think its like finding a new shell on a fresh beach.

Whew...okay, lol. It just kinda scared me, seeing that he was in a new shell. I know its not the tank conditions. The temp hovers at about 75 and the humidity hovers between 75 and 80% I didn't know if that caused it or if he was just being picky with his shell. Thanks for your quick answers! Now I can rest at ease.

This is completely normal behavior, in fact I have some very picky crabs and one of them even changed like 5 times in one night. Very amusing to watch.

I have pictures of one of my adoptees "shell shopping" on my bed. :D As I type, the shell against glass party begins. I'm thinking of moving them out of my bedroom.
