my crabs are digging like never before!

Post by hulk » Tue Nov 20, 2007 7:46 pm

are your crabs digging like crazy or just mine? I have craters everywhere...and they are BIG and small...all my crabs are under digging tunnels and popping up in all directions it is a crzy mess...thye are burrying the food dishes and just going crazy!

I mean crazy! I have never had them do this before..well except when I first go my straws (who are now in crabby heaven) so what gives? I even had Hulk and Spidergirl my two biggest one digging together? very strange events here> lol! I don't know what to expect next =) I am hoping my tiny guys are ok with all the digging and I hope their are no molters in trouble.

Isn't that odd. All of my crabs are down too. I thought I was doing something wrong. My two piggie crabs are usually out this time of nite. I don't see them.... :?:

Maybe... I dunno... My only one I've seen tonight is the teeny E I rescued and all I got to see of him/her was the back of her her shell as she was digging a new whole into the substrate. (She needs to molt... Badly... And so the tank is covered in a towel except to change the food and water dishes.)

Al of mine are buried as well. Since I am new to this I thought something was wrong with them. This is too weird......

yeah, I only see them here and there so I don't theink they are molting..but all dug under pretty much all the time. Even my most active one who are ALWAYS OUT are digging down. I wonder if it is because it is finally getting very cold out here..but the tank temps are pretty much the same.

I am glad mine aren't the only ones. I was worried they were trying to tell me something haha!

The tank is trashed and I am not attempting to fix it cause everytime I do the dishes with fresh sand free food it si burried again..so i know they are up to something =)

Maybe it is seasonal.....all of mine are hiding as well...BUT the other night when I did "crabentory", I actually saw all but 7 of my crabs!
Apparently, that was a once and done thing because now I only see 7. :x

That is really weird - mine are digging a lot also. It must be a seasonal thing. I just had 4 successful molts with my Ps and now all have dug in again including my large straw and I haven't seen anyone for days.

Only my tiny straw is out and about and he never seems to slow down. I've found Tiny in the strangest places and even in the day, he's usually hanging (and I do mean hanging) around the tank. He seems to like to impersonate a caterpiller in it's cocoon. He's in a small japanese snail shell and will hang by two feet from just about anything.

5 of 7 of mine are dug down almost all the time, with the other 2 digging ocasionally, they wreck and eat/drink all the water and food too, I think I might have a mass moult soon

Well, I feel a little better knowing other people's crabs are inactive or digging. I'm still new at this and I've been afraid I was doing something wrong. I keep telling my sister I don't know what I'm doing wrong, the temp is 80 degrees and the humidity is 80-85%. Every night I check the dechlor and saline water, give them food and mist the tank. I have a sand and EE mix and have some wood to climb and a reptile log to hide in. Even with that the crabs are are either buried in the sand or just sitting in the corner. My newest crab was fairly active but is now burying himself or hiding in the log. I've been very upset thinking I am a "crab killer".

I don't want to come across rude but you mean salt water right? Saline I think is a chemical and can harm hermies, I think you spray it on plants to kill bugs?
