well, it certainly doesn't to me. I've tried it with most of my larges or jumbos. some enjoy it, some do not. the ones who do not just kinda sit there looking confused, so you know not to try it with them again. my first crab, a jumbo named big 'un, loved it. he would wheel around my dorm room in that thing and it was great because i didnt have much space, but didn't want to risk anyone stepping on him or anything.Hermit_of_Hermit_Crabs wrote:Cruelty comes to mind when I think of those.
its not "cruel." in my mind, the world cruelty is very very harsh and should be reserved for things like trying to pull a crab out of its shell or using hermies as golf balls. not for a well-meaning person experimenting with ways to utilize a small amount of space.

hehe, thats how it was with my large straws. the picture of utter confusion when i sat them in the ball. but my PPs, on the other hand, take off like a rocket, no holding them back! perhaps PPs are smarter or better learnersGrammarcia wrote:I have 2 of the balls, and to me they seem very safe. It's unlikely that a crab would get a leg stuck in one of the slits. My only problem is I can't seem to get any of my crabs to understand how to use it.

I use it for i live in a dorm room and i don't want to go crab hunting so i put it in the ball and then i just watch the blue ball move around. I don't use the normal hamster ball but a small one that is about a size of baseball but just a little bit bigger. my baby seems to love it in fact it has taken to the game of "try to trip the humans"

How do you know they enjoy it? I highly dought they are "enjoying it" That's ridiculous.
Whats the point anyway? There is no reason to do something like that to your crabs besides getting some sick little enjoyment from watching your crabs wonder around in balls like hamsters, well here is a news flash there not hamsters. This is along the same lines as "crabs needing exercise" and I disagree with that also.
^excuse rant.
But things like this make me sick, Why can't people just leave the crabs be in there tank. Well whatever.....I suppose each is entitled to there own opinion.
To the OP (Original Poster) just make sure you don't have to small of a tank for your number of crabs, and also make sure that you have plenty of good hiding spots, then you will not have to do silly things like this, your crabs will be the better for it.

Personally, I haven't done this to my crabs, but to the people who are questioning how one knows their crab is enjoying it, I'd say - How do you know any animal is enjoying anything? How do you know the crabs actually enjoy living in their tank? I could argue that even keeping crabs period is cruel since we're denying them space to roam around in and denying them the ability to reproduce (which is any species main function).
I'm just playing Devil's Advocate, but I thought those posts were a little harsh and they weren't even directed at me. Some people feel they need to dress their dogs up in clothes to keep them "warm" others feel the need to let their crabs have some running around/exploring time. As long as the crab isn't stressed (sitting there/hiding/etc) I don't see the harm in it. That's my opinion.
