Pinching Problem :(

Post by Guest » Mon Aug 11, 2008 7:59 am

Luckily, it's not MY crabs that are pinching.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in a pet store getting supplies for my hermies. I thought I would take a look at the hermit crab cage there and see how conditions were. (This store usually takes pretty horrible care of its hermit crabs, but it's the only one around that actually sells hermit crabs and hermie supplies. :? )

I looked in the cage and saw a medium-sized hermy walking around and looking pretty happy. I asked one of the store managers if I could pick it up, and he gave me permission. I picked it up, put it on my hand, and here's the very FIRST thing it did: walked over to the soft spot between my first two fingers and PINCHED down hard. And rhythmically. And no matter how steady I held my hand, that little guy did NOT let go.

There I was, middle of the pet store, crab clamping down on me. Manager took me into the back room to help get the crab off, and finally it just let go voluntarily.

Now, I love my own hermies and I've never had any problems with them pinching. They're at the border between small and medium, so they're smaller than the Pincher was, anyway. Now, I've never handled my hermies that often; when I do, it's to inspect them and see if they're healthy, ready to molt, etc.

I find I'm afraid to pick them up even to check on them. :( How common is pinching behavior in crabs? Will certain crabs pinch more than others, just based on personality? Did I just pick up a meanie? Or was he just scared to be held?

Help me get back on the horse again! :D

Let's put it this way. Those hermit crabs live in a terrible tank, only have pellets to eat every day of their life, and the employees probably poke and annoy them all day so they move around for any potential buyers. He's got a right to be grumpy.

It is fairly common for pet store crabs to pinch. Especially larger crabs who are more aware of their surroundings. They've been handled a lot. They're stressed, often in hostile conditions. Some crabs will just pinch until they are feeling less stressed.

Even after they've been in your tank a while some crabs are just pinchier than others. I find it's the same 2 or 3 crabs in my tank that like to pinch.

My two PPs were pinchy when I first got them. Each got me once, and one got my friend the first night and wouldn't let go for like a minute. I got them from a boardwalk store so who knows how many people would go in and poke them and drop them and whatever else. I've had them for about a month now and they don't even try to pinch me anymore.

We have 5 crabbies right now. The only one that has every pinched was Anchor who was named for the style of pinching which was done to my son. Anchor pinched hard and was latched onto his hand for about 5 minutes. Yes, I'm sure it was 5 minutes. I was driving when it happened and had to pull off the side of the road, check out the situation and get a bottle of water out of the other side of the car. We poured water over that crab for a good long time but then suddenly instead of letting go, Anchor chomped down even harder. Ricky was sitting there, biting his lip while the blood started to trickle, keeping his hand still. Finally Anchor let go and walked off. I have never seen anything like it and I hate to say it but I was seriously considering having to break her BP.

Ricky was so used to our crab, Hermie who is very gentle that it never occurred to him to let Anchor destress but he sure knows now! Anchor hasn't made any moves to pinch since adjusting to life here but Ricky doesn't trust her. He uses socks on his hands and lets her climb on his clothes when he is laying watching TV but no more bare-handing her! I keep hoping that he will "get over it" because he isn't afraid of his other crabbies, but so far, no go. And really...I don't blame him for his caution.

Well, to add to what the other posters mentioned above, I would have to say that they are "crabs" (well, creatures with pinchers) and definitely it is in their nature to pinch.

The impression that they are "hand pets" are an unfortunate part of how they were/are still being marketed - as time goes on, I find that good hermit crab care and husbandry entails that they do not be handled as often as we would like (there are exceptions, like the 30 year old Jonathan and Kate crabs) I'm afraid.

For some handling advice, I would suggest that you would only handle crabs that have been in your care for a week or more. I generally would not "palm handle", or let crawl on my hand, any land hermit crabs that are:

1. fresh from the petshop

2. from some other crab's keeper care (sometimes, they do respond more positively from their own owner's hands than a strangers - but might not be the case for some crabs).

3. most importantly, any crab from the wild (the smalls can/do draw blood, in my personal experience.)

For any of the crabs that fit criteria 1-3, I would suggest just handling carefully by the snail shell if they need to be handled/moved, or just not handle them at all unless they have been acclimated properly to your tank.

Thanks much, all. My husband is more confident in handling the crabs anyway, so we have one way of checking on them. :D

And again, we only handle them occasionally, just to check for signs of impending molt and to see if they're healthy.

They seem to be doing alright--one down for two weeks or so (not sure if he's de-stressing or molting, but I'm not bugging him) and two shell-shopping.

My hermit crabs haven't pinched me yet but I also don't pick them up unless I need to. My friend on the other hand picks her crab up all the time and our other friend dropped hers on the concrete so it has pinched her. But mine are so sweet but nervous.

Joel

Your posting was right on.

My husband handles the crabs alot and one of the larger ones bit him a little. So now he's handling her gently and letting her take the initiative as to when she is ready to come out of her shell to say hello.

i haven't been pinched so far. i handled my crabs more in the beginning, but then realized it was better to leave them alone and now only get them out occasionally. they have always been cautious but very gentle, coming out of their shells readily on my palm and climbing around on my hands and arms. the closest thing to a pinch is when they have to grab on to avoid falling, but this too is quite gentle and not like an actual pinch.

They all have different personalities just like people. The 2nd crab that I have gotten (almost 2 years old I believe) I got from petco for my 1st hermit crab that found me so she wouldn't be lonely. My 1st crab Hermie, was the sweetest thing never pinched so I decided to hold the new guy. He was a pincher!!! Ouch! I never held him again til recently and now he is sweet after 2 molts with me. They have to adjust to their surroundings and not be afraid of you. Remember they are taken off their beach and put into bad conditions without a clue of what is going to happen to them...

Hmmm...the smallest one that drew blood from me (a wild C. rugosus) felt like some sort of syringe needle, but a bit tougher. Kinda hard to describe, but a bit worse than the biggest ant bite you can imagine. Depends on your pain tolerance...I guess it's like getting that flap of skin between your knuckles caught under a chair or something... :? :D

I've never been pinched by any of my little guys, but my boyfriend was holding one of the larger ones, and he must have been scared because he clamped down, very hard. My boyfriend calmly turned to me and said hey, uhm, can you help me out here.. hahaha and after i grabbed some choya and he climbed off, i scolded my boyfriend for scaring my little baby!!

something to add. this is pretty obvious, but i've noticed that they feel much different before and after a molt. with those long, fresh nails and sharper pinchers they feel really prickly even doing something as simple as walking around or standing in one place on your skin. seems like this would make it a lot easier for them to cause pain and/or bleeding.
