How do hermit crabs poop?

I know its a weird question but I was wondering because they always have there abdomen in their shell.

Good question.

They have a part at the very back of their abdomen which is where they excrete feces.

I forget the name of this part.

Anyway, once they excrete it, they will use their appendages inside the shell to basically pull it out and put it somewhere so it's not in the shell.

That's why you find it in the food dishes or other common "toilet" spots.

Why don't we make the poop question into a sticky. HERMEZ took some great picture a few years ago. I know I posted them, to everyones delight. I just don't know where they are now, but it would be a great service to newbees and also to oldbees since we won't have to read through any more poop jokes.

Apparently she made more than that one thread; just look up "Hermez" as the author and "poop" as a keyword in the "search" function and you'll see more than one entry....there's one big one in the archived forum.

Stickys are the topics at the topic of a section (Crab Behavior has none - but other sections do) that are stuck there by mods because they are of importance. Using the search tool mentioned is a great way to find information. We have a lot of useful topics and archives here.
