My shyest indo: a happy tale :)

Post by wolfnipplechips » Mon Jun 20, 2011 5:53 pm

I ordered from LHC last year in August. Part of my order were two small indos. One was outgoing, and changed shells often. I hardly saw the other from day 1, and he was missing his feeder claw and a walking leg. He took to hiding 24/7, and I thought he was probably dead.

When I did a deep clean months later, I found him still alive, still missing legs. However, he had become very sluggish (more-so than normal indo sluggishness) and I hand-fed him honey and peanut butter for a few days to give him a boost (which took forever because he wouldn't come out of his shell for about 20 minutes when I first would pick him up).

He dug down, molted, and re-grew both his missing legs. I expected him to be more outgoing and active, but he started hiding again, and after months of not seeing him, I was convinced again that he must be dead. I have literally seen him out on his own <10 times in the last year. But for the last week or so, he has been hanging out with the other indo by the pools! :)

He seems to be very healthy. Still shy, and more skittish than indos normally are (he acts like a purple pincher), but I am very happy to actually be seeing him instead of wondering if he is dead. He has even been sleeping with all the other crabs up on the second level! I wonder what brought on this sudden personality change? Maybe it was the longest de-stressing period ever. hahaha

So don't give up on your shy crabs!! Their personalities can change. :)

This gives me hope.

Spikester is totally shy in the since that I have yet to see his eyes, even with me sitting at the tank for an hour. I know he moves, just does not want to do it with me near.

Tomrow will make his first week with me, so, he has a right to still be shy though, I guess.

That's great! :P

I also have some indos, and one of them is extremely shy. I barely saw him at all the first six months (I've had him for about 1½ year now), but now he is out walking around in the crabitat without having any problems with me watching him - but when I take him out to take some pictures, I mostly have to wait 50-80 minutes before he even begin to stick out his legs from his shell. ^^ So some indos are apparently very shy.
