Larges and Teeny in same cage?

Post by Fateless » Tue Aug 23, 2011 5:44 pm

I have 2 Large+ crabs, and one teeny, who is in a crab carrier. I was given the teeny by a parents friend who couldn't care for him anymore..
But I want to get him out of the carrier soon, and I will, BUT, I don't want him to be alone...

So, can I put him in with my 2 Large+?
(If I can't I will buy some more teenys or smalls or mediums for him.. but I really don't want smaller crabs)

Of course you can mix them! :) It's actually better to have a mix of sizes so they don't covet each other's shells. I've had jumbos and micros in the same tank and it's so cute to watch them since there is such a dramatic difference in their sizes. The one thing you may have to do is have more than one feeding area - some of the big guys like to hog the dishes and the little ones won't compete with them for dinner.

Alright!! Thank you, I'll move him over ASAP, be because the tiny seems to be digging quite a bit.

Are you sure there won't be fighting? Or, do you think having the jumbos there will stress this little guy out?

I don't think he'll be stressed at all, and there shouldn't be any fighting. Giving the little one a freshwater bath when you move him into the new tank is a good idea - it makes him smell neutral and it helps with getting everyone to accept each other faster. You may see some frantic antenna wiggling - that's normal. :) The big guys will sometimes shove little crabs out of the way with a flick of their big pincher - again, this is rather normal and it seems to be a way that crabs show who is in charge. It can be really scary the first time you see it, but it only ever happens when they're first introduced and everyone is learning their place. If there's a huge size difference then they usually just ignore each other since the little ones already know where they stand and the big guys aren't feeling threatened in the least. :)

Alright, Thank you again!
I though I'd move him in around, now, but I have deep pool dishes, with some shells on the side but I think It may be way to deep for him to go in and get out, so maybe when I get my 90g set up I can move him in there where I'll have pools with a walk down side.

I have smalls to larges in my 90. Some of the smalls were teeny when they went in. I also have deeper dishes - about 2.5" for the salt water and 1.5" for the fresh. I use plastic canvas to make a way out for the small guys and hold it in place with a rock in the dish. I've never had a problem and I know one small E fell in the salt water dish one day because I watched him fall over backwards from the edge and land in the dish. He climbed right out. Yes, I know, the dishes need to be cleaned - tonight was Straw maintenance on the mite issue - the big tank gets water changed tomorrow.

I got them both at reptilesupply.com. I love that site and their prices on dishes are great, but it ends up costing me money ever time I browse on there! I like the look of the sunken pond, but it's sort of a pain to change water. Since it's down in the substrate and crabs dig in around it I don't pull it to clean it. Instead I use a baster to take out the water, then wipe it out well with paper towels.

CrabbyMom, that's a brilliant idea regarding the plastic canvas "ladder". Should there still be stones (other than the one to hold it down) in there to help them out though, or are they all able to figure out the canvas ladder?

Mine have done fine on the canvas. I've put smalls in there, bordering on teeny's, and never had a problem. I've seen several crabs hang on to the plastic canvas to get down to the water. I have shells that also help them out of the water. I had to find a way to provide deeper water for those that want it and a safe way out for the little guys. Most scale the shells without a problem when I've seen small to medium ones end up in the dish unintended. That is usually the result of pulling back into their shelll if I walk up, then falling backward into the pool.
