Breed Personalitys

Post by MilkingMooMoo's » Sun May 06, 2012 10:22 pm

So I have been trying to find out lately the different personality's the different breeds of hermit crabs tend to have. I tried looking it up elsewhere but everything I find just says the differences on the way each breed looks. For example I would love to know which breeds tend to be shy, or outgoing, ext. Really I just want to know for future reference, I just got my first crabs exactly a week ago so I defiantly wont be going for the exotic breeds for years. Thanks in advance for the help!

All I know is that compared to PPs, Es are apparently more active; they climb more, they are more likely to be seen crawlin' around in the daytime.
When I finally get my own apartment I want to get a couple Es for that reason. I've heard they're pretty wild! I dunno about any other breeds though.

I agree with Whatthemath about E's, and PP's are a bit less shy than E's and come out more often in your hand, also, other species that i don't own but have read about are Ruggies and blueberries. Ruggies I believe are hardy and quite alike in comparison to PP's, and Blueberries all i know is apparently they're aggressive around food. With other exotics perhaps someone with most experience with them can share their thoughts? I'd like to know as well.

My ruggies and strawberrys are very active during the day. My ruggies are constantly climbing things in the Day And when i take Them Out Nothing Stops them from coming out of thier Shell. Ruggies are more low maintenance like the pp, but straws require a lot more care, they need a certain environment.

My PPs just like to hang out. I still see them, but they're usually just sitting there relaxing. New tank decor or yummy foods really bring them out, though.

My Es are another story. All most all through the day light hours I will see an E climbing on something. They are very good at knocking things over and I often have to spend about 5 min every morning fixing the tank up.

My straws are new to me (I've only had them a week this coming Wednesday), but so far (even through the stress of being shipped to me), they are very active. I see one in particular climbing something every day. I've heard that straws are some of the most active of the land hermit crabs, but mine are new to me and I haven't quite had the chance to experience that.

I got my Violas the same time as my straws and when I first opened them up, 2 were very friendly and came right out. The third was shy and almost wouldn't let me see him at all. As of now, 2 are buried, so I can't tell you much about them, but the last likes to hang out on my vine and bridge. I get to see (without looking for) him a lot more than I see my PPs, but less than my Es and Straws.

My Es are awake most of the day and night with little naps in between . They are always out. My PPs come out every night from hiding briefly but they don't move as fast and seem more comfortable being held. But I have only had them a short time.
