Big move for a lot of crabs!!! Advice for moving crabs neede

Post by Ryry » Thu Mar 31, 2016 8:57 pm

Hello all! I recently moved into my new house and have been slowly getting my new upgraded tank ready for my crabs! They will be upgrading from a 55gal to a 120gal. As I'm prepping their new tank to move them into I am wondering about my crabs that are currently under in the old tank.

In my old tank I have around 11 crabs. Ranging from small to jumbo. Only about 2-4 crabs are currently up. My jumbo Poseidon is currently down- possibly molting. Image
She has been down for maybe 3 weeks. I'm hoping she comes up soon because she is the one I'm most afraid of digging up. The reason I'm even considering digging is that it will be far too hard for me to take care of two full sized tanks for more than a few weeks. From my old place to my new it's about a half hour drive and I work full time(Did I mention I'm pregnant On top of it all?).

I figure I can move them as they come up- but once Poseidon comes up I think I will dig up the whole tank and finish the move all at once.

If any one has any input on digging up crabs and moving them to another location, transporting ideas, or anything else that can help me I would appreciate the input!

Nope! It's actually my existing tank at my old place- and my upgraded tank at my new place. I'm trying my hardest to get my new tank set up and start moving my crabbies to their new and improved home- but I worry about transporting the crabs while moving tank products. For instance my UTH is on the old tank and I'm going to take it with me with the first move of crabs to the new tank. The old one will still have a heat light but it is worrisome to lower the old tanks heat source. That would be one of my big concerns.

The other being the care being administered to the old tank. You really can't trust any one to care for your crabs like you do. The fresh water pool was dry when I stopped by the other day I really want to move them all right now- but I'm afraid to dig up my jumbo crab.

Any advice on digging up colonies and moving them would be appreciated!

This is just a suggestion, I am by no means an expert in crab care, since im still in the trial and error phase (which is easy thanks to this site!!), but perhaps there is some way to scoop them up with the dirt? You could put them in ISO after that until they come up, then at least you could have them in the new house but not have to put them in the new tank until they're done doing their thing underground?
