Help, there seems to be fugus or shell rot on my crab :(

Post by SydneyB » Mon Nov 28, 2016 6:04 pm

Hey guys,

One of my crabs recently turned a really intense shade of purple, like lavender purple. I was keeping an eye on him due to the color change when i noticed he had a mark on his big claw, this mark has now spread and there appears to be a brownish fungus type thing growing from it. He wont go down to molt and I'm freaking out pretty hard. I cant find any good pages on how to treat potential shell rot or fungus so I'm not sure what to do other than clean out the cage, but that's also a problem since my other two are down for molting.

Yes, pic please. From what I have read about shell rot, it appears as black or dark green patches - most common on the legs. May need a more experienced crabber to chime in here but a picture of ur hermie would be helpful.

Waiting for pics...
Its its a fungus, giving the crab in question a salt water bath each day - where he is "walking around, allowing "salt access" to all parts of his body and shell - could help as fungus doesn't appreciate salt. If you have and ISO, transfer him to that! Fungus can be "contagious" and will spread to other crabs. Its also important to avoid cross commission as well - if its bad... waiting for pics - so a pair of rubber gloves could be used when your handling him/accessing his cage... and/or attending to your other crabs before you attend to him.

Before you start treating the crab, you need to identify what you are treating it for. Don't assume it's a fungus and put the crab through the daily stress of a SW bath without knowing for sure.

Pictures would help!
