My hermit Crab is a born nudist....

Post by madiem » Sat Aug 05, 2017 11:33 pm

So, one of my Ecuadorian hermit crabs is streaking for the third time this week, poor little thing is so stressed. When i was gone for a month i had someone taking care of my animals and he did the crappiest job i swear i was better off asking my dog to watch the house
anyways, every time i see the little guy naked i immediately put him in a tiny confined tank with a couple of shells, sometimes he will choose a shell, live in it for a couple of days then go naked again. I think any changes that happen to the tank such as moved decorations, new sand, etc, stresses him out who knows lol i'm just hoping he picks a shell and stays in the dang thing!!

A deshelled crab is not normal, and it means either he is stressed or something is irritating him... I would suggest filling out the emergency template, to see if everything is a ok in your setup.

Never said it was normal! if you read it correctly i stated that he/she is probably stressed due to the different changes of the tank or because things were bad when i was gone.

I did read correctly, but i want to stress the importance that this is not a good behavioural sign.

I understand what you're saying 100%! But please understand,me stressing out over a crab stressing isn't going to help solve the situation. I've made sure to completely isolate the hermit with food and plenty of shells to choose from, since then hes in a shell walking around, drinking water, responding like he should great. Just because i'm not panicking about the situation and instead putting the situation into a little humor doesn't mean i don't care.
Certain animals, crustaceans and even humans all stress out over the same or different thing, he just seemed stressed due to the tank changing a lot. I try my hardest to make the tank look the best as it can be for them. I never post any pictures on here but if you look at my instagram page- animallove8122
you will see they are more spoiled than i even spoil myself

I think you may be misunderstanding.

A crab repeatedly going without a shell is an issue. This is a concern.

All shells need to be in shapes and sizes the species prefers and needs.

They should be rinsed and free of debris.

If the crab goes without a shell for more than 10-20 minutes, you need to manually reshell it. This means picking the crab up and gently placing the abdomen in a shell.

Also everyone needs to remember that discussions are for the benefit of every member. Just because you may know something or have good tank conditions doesn't mean that others cannot learn from the contents of this post.

Something is not right for this crab to keep going without a shell and it isn't tank changes or someone else watching it for a few days.
