Large PP attacked, stable, but what next?

Post by kamiraptor » Wed Jun 27, 2018 11:33 am

Hi everyone, I'm looking for advice on where to go next.

Yesterday, I noticed that my largest crab, Rosie, had been attacked. She's missing her big claw and shield leg (all other legs and antennae seem to be okay.) Even though I have plenty of shells in there, I think my other PP got cranky after her molt and picked (and won) a fight.

Everyone got a bath in saltwater to help with smells, more fresh shells were added, and I used a corner shower caddy to isolate Rosie with food, powdered calcium, raw honey, and both fresh and marine salt water. She is mobile and seems to have regained some energy, so I'm fairly optimistic she'll molt and regrow her limbs okay.

I have five crabs (one small down molting) in a 55gallon tank, with a 20Tall topper that I just got set up less than a month ago. There are lots of hides and things to climb, substrate is an average of 13inches deep (I have two Es and they're determined diggers!), humidity and heat are optimally stable after a few weeks of tweaking after adding the topper.

So, here's my question: should I take that topper off to make a long-term Iso for Rosie? I wouldn't need much to make it happen, but I'll have to get conditions worked out again, this time in two tanks. Should I leave her in iso under that caddy in the main tank, and if so all the way until she molts? Depending on price of tanks, I might also be able to get a ten-gallon tank and set up a devoted iso tank, in case anything like this happens again.

I would really love opinions on what to do. She's one of my favorites and I want to take good care of her with as little stress as possible. Thanks everyone!

Here's a pic (if img linking works :P) of her in her in-tank iso:

As long as she is moving around and eating alright, you can leave her in the main tank. If you notice that she isn't, or it looks like the other crab is being a bully again, I'd suggest isolating the bully crab.

I agree with Soilentgringa. Also - for future, if you must dip them, I would recommend dipping them in their fw and not their msw.

For the future, it probably wouldn't hurt to pick up a cheap tank from a second hand store, CL, offerup or letgo. :) It never huts to have one on hand!! :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

All right, thank you both! I've been a worried crab-mom!

After this, I am definitely planning to get the things needed for an emergency/iso tank. Hopefully none of this happens again, but, well, better safe than sorry.

You don't need to use a tank, you could just use a small bin
One or hopefully two Clypeatus
Goodbye my little E. See you soon.
Bye Fred. You lasted almost 4 years with me. Hope you're with my E now! See you soon Reeba as well. I can't believe I lost you only after a month.
