Shell Shortage

Post by costco » Wed Sep 23, 2020 11:18 am

Hello! I've heard and seen that there are not enough shells for wild hermit crabs, causing them to wear litter such as soda cans. I've looked it up and there are a bunch of articles from 2011, but not a lot since.
Does anyone have any recent information? Is it possible to 3d print shells to help or is the plastic harmful? Are there any organizations for this?
Thank you!

You’d need some fancy equipment to print shells and smooth out the inside spirals.

Plastic shells also break down into microplastics, so you’d be looking at a biodegradable plastic so it can decompose “properly”. You’d also need permission from the local municipality or landowner whose land you’re dropping shells on so you aren’t charged with littering.
