I'm starting hermit crab rescue!!!!
Hey everybody! I'm starting a hermit crab rescue! Yay! I've already partnered up with one of my friends, pumpkin crab and her shop, CloverScrubsShop! She's going to make bundles for my rescue to go with the crabs that are adopted. I'm planning on starting a Facebook page for the rescue where I'll post everything. I have a 20 gallon long and a 10 gallon tank I would be using for the rescue. I'm making a big Amazon and Petco order with all of the supplies that I need. I ask the person with an ad on Facebook marketplace with for hermit crabs if they were still available but she hasn't responded yet:/
I'm super excited!!!

Re: I'm starting hermit crab rescue!!!!
I've done crab rescue before. My first rescue was100's of crabs in a 40g tank that a going out of business pet store was going to throw out--tank and all. I spent thousands of dollars buying tanks and equipment to house them all. I had 2-3 crab tanks in every room in my house. It's a noble but very expensive endeavor especially if you get a large scale intake without enough equipment!

Re: I'm starting hermit crab rescue!!!!
I bought the tank, a 40B with all the contents. It contained fouled, slimy kitty litter across the bottom and had a large shallow "catch all" dish and an gigantic aquarium decor ship that I dubbed the Mother Ship because about 50 crabs hid in there and refused to come out for months.
I bought tanks and lids at every garage sale and 2nd hand store I could find. I bought 100's of pounds of sand and probably 25 triple packs of EE along with heaters by the dozens.
I probably spent upwards of $5000.00 in the first 24-48 hours. I started sorting crabs into tanks by appearance of good health. Those that were super lethargic or with multiple limbs dropped went together into "sick" tanks. Those that were more active and vigorous went together into "seems okay" tanks. As they bailed out on the Mother Ship I continued placing them into tanks and buying more tanks. Most tanks were either 20L, 29, 40B, or 55 gallons. I had them on the floors because stands were not important to me at that time.
After the first week, I started spending my money on food and shells. I made 2-3 orders of shells that topped $1000.00 because they were all in painted shells.
After they started molting, I started giving them away in trios and larger groups to experienced crab owners.
When I had them down to about 4-5 larger tanks, my marriage went kaput and I had to get rid of them all in a hurry. I gave the rest (except for a 10g with my original crab) to a teen boy who ran a reptile rescue out of his home--with parental support. He got all the extra tanks, shells, food, spare parts, decor, etc . for free. We stayed in touch for a couple of years and he was doing well with them.
I can't even imagine how much I actually spent over the course of the year or two that I had them all. Surprisingly only one died that wasn't DOA. I did get a tank of mites and I had roaches inhabit one tank--never knew how I dragged them in...

Re: I'm starting hermit crab rescue!!!!
I kept half as many crabs per tank as the gallonage--way over crowded, I know, but this was an emergency! A 20g would house 10 crabs; the 29s would house 15; the 40's would house 20 crabs, etc. I used dry erase markers to write myself notes on the tank lids or sides.
None of the tanks had lights, that was an expense I felt unnecessary.

Wow! That's incredible! I was supposed to be rescuing three crabs last weekend but unfortunately the lady sister died and she had to go out of town because of the loss: (mool wrote: ↑Sat Mar 06, 2021 10:53 amI've done crab rescue before. Re: I'm starting hermit crab rescue!!!!
During the big rescue, I did several smaller rescues of anywhere from 1 to 10 crabs. I required that they give me their complete set up (whatever that looked like). I picked up several useless wire cages and a few 10 gallon tanks. I did have a few pps deaths from the extra rescues. Some people had them for months in improper conditions and about 1/3 didn't survive to make it through a molt.
The first 48 hours to week were crazy hectic and expensive and then again there was a big expense buying shells, but it became easy to manage.
I got a $500.00 donation and made a friend! A woman and her two wild and crazy kids came out to pick out some crabs. The kids loved my house because I had horses, goats, chickens, etc. and they ran my property and played with the animals for hours--and got absolutely filthy. The woman actually hosed them off outside (I offered to let them take showers, she said the hose was fine). They picked out their crabs and she wanted to pay me for them. I said no. She left me a $500.00 check! Turns out she is a pediatric neurosurgeon and her husband is an orthopedic surgeon. That explained the brand new Ranger Rover! We've remained friends and were going to lunch infrequently until the pandemic.

What a great story! You saved so many crabs...that’s amazing! It must have been so chaotic at first, haha. Very cool that you made a friend in the process too.
