Hello! I replaced my aquarium hood with a piece of acrylic. It fits very snug and has been good for humidity and temp. But, I’m wondering, should I secure it with anything? I don’t want any escape attempts. If so, how would you recommend I secure it?
Also, I didn’t drill any holes in the acrylic. From my understanding the hermies get air from tank maintenance. But, I’m hoping for more info or opinions.
Thanks in advance
New acrylic lid...how to secure, and what about air holes?

Awesome! Maybe to prevent escape attempts, you could get some kind of latch to help secure it? I have a plexiglass lid over a screen lid, and I have black clips that help keep everything secure. It also helps bc if I need to get into the tank, I can quickly remove the clip on the front and lift the lid a bit.
As far as the lid goes, you do not need any air holes drilled into the top, unless you want to drill holes for tubing for your pool bubblers, plants, or other accessories. As long as you are opening the lid every day to do quick tank maintenance (cleaning uneaten food off of the substrate, picking up fallen/knocked over decor, feeding them fresh foods, etc.), they actually are okay since they breathe through modified gills and not lungs - hence, the need for humidity to keep them moist. Plus, keeping the lid tight will keep in heat and humidity. If you have holes, it would take more effort to balance the two.
Hope this helps!!

Thanks so much for your reply! What kind of clips do you use? So far I’ve just kept books on top of the corners My humidity has been high since I added the acrylic lid. So I end up airing it out anyway. Lol!PinkyNTwinkie33 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 8:41 pmAwesome! Maybe to prevent escape attempts, you could get some kind of latch to help secure it? New acrylic lid...how to secure, and what about air holes?
You’re welcome!! Oh yeah - with the new acrylic, I bet it is way up compared to what it was before!! It may take about a week to stabilize along with the heat. You can also use some dried out New Zealnd sphagnum moss and place it right on top of the substrate and it helped to soak up extra humidity, especially if it is dripping from the lids or sides of the tank! Once the moss is moist, you can get rid of it, then add in new dry moss also!
I am not sure what the clips are exactly called, but here is a picture of one for you - the top pic is the actual clip and the bottom is when it is on the tank. They work really well for me! I use one on each of the 4 sides of my tank and it works perfectly!!
