Compressus Clypeatus!

Post by KyMart » Thu May 16, 2024 11:11 am

My work sells hermit crabs, and I hate it but have done my best to improve their care. We now sell 3 gallon tanks and natural shells which is a set in the right direction but I won’t stop there! Anyways, my sister told me that they sent home the last two PPs with me yesterday and I was confused at to why, since it’s summer. She told me that they apparently got “salt water land crabs” from Florida Marine Research and they needed “only salt water” and couldn’t have any freshwater so the PPs had to go home. My jaw dropped and I said, “that’s not a think with land hermit crabs, I am so confused”. She sent me a picture and I kid you not the sheet says “Compressus Clypeatus”. I informed her that Compressus Clypeatus don’t exist! I told her that Coenobita Compressus is the scientific name NOT Compressus Clypeatus. I informed her that they are in fact Ecuadorian crabs, also known as Es and sent her the HCA care sheet for them to show her that they need both salt water and fresh water to live just like PPs. She is shocked and mad that FMR don’t know their hermit crab scientific names or basic information about them! She told me they are more active then the PPs, and I told her that is normal. I am honestly shocked we got a shipment of non PPs to the U.S.! I will definitely be setting up my 10 gallon and taking two home now that we have them, because this might be my only chance to get my hands on some Es! I’m still shocked that FRM got the scientific name so wrong!:
I have 5 PPs in a 40 gallon breeder!

There’ve been many reports of Es being imported into the United States. Seems like vendors are sourcing crabs from places other than Haiti at the moment
