straws seem to be like salt water angel fish they start ou tlooking like this

then they grow up to look like this

that just goes to say that young animal dont alway look like they belong to one family but when they grow up you can see that they do.

I have a green little E here. She's Greenish/dark blue, with an almost black rear left leg. Her antennea are almost neon blue and black, very beautiful.

From what I've seen, when E's loose their blueish coloring, they turn greenish and then onto another color, like tan.

Pretty sure Rugs can get greenish too.

I had never seen any that had the stripes, and I thought mine was pretty young. Oh well....just wanted to share my pics. I just got a digital camera this past weekend so I can FINALLY show pics of my crabs. lol.

Size isn't necessarily an indication of age.

And your straw is sort of intermediate; his claw still has light patches on it. You can see where he used to be white.

They may also darken up quicker on atolls with more food resources.

I didn't know that. I thought the size is generally how you can tell how old they are since they molt and grow bigger w/ age. So I guess mine not be as young as I thought.

It is a rough guide, yes, but growth depends on proper nutrition. If a crab isn't getting what it needs to molt, it won't. From what I've heard a lot of the atolls have limited resources and the crabs are quite aggressive when brought in from there. If there isn't a lot of food, they'd grow more slowly. Just thinking out loud, I guess. Maybe your crab is a runt.

Yeah ... your straw is wonderful. When I was in Kindergarten many hermit crab vendors often had such brught red straws ( from medium to a jumbo size ) in their stock.

But I don't know why straws are going to rarer and rarer around JKT and Sunda Strait, or West Coast of Sumatra Island. Could they be more sensitive to pollution than other hermies ? (Rugs, Cavs, and Indos)

thought i would throw in a picture i just found as well it shows more of the crab and less of the shell. i've never owned a straw in my life so i wouldnt' really know, but all the stripped straws i've seen have had more red in the thorax than these, though of course color is a horrible indicator of species most times.

whether they are straws or not, they sure are beautiful

agratmahla,
Good job finding that pic! You can see the crab a lot better than the one I found! :) I agree, the colors on these crabs in the pics aren't very red, they are more brown/maroon. But maybe that's how Straws start out? Who knows...I agree they are cute and I wish we could buy some here!

I saw those pandanus plants and fruit on Kauai!

Yes, I agree, young straws. RedSox is kind of stripey like that around the joints.
