Personalities of Different Species

Post by Guest » Mon Aug 15, 2005 8:39 pm

I'm just curious about the personalities of different species. Which ones are the most friendly, social, active, etc?

I love them all, but I would have to say out of all of mine the ruggies are the sweetest and most outgoing, closely followed by the E's who are very active but don't like to be handled as much, my PP's are sweet as the dickens but like to hide and dig making it hard to "connect" with them. Except for Dumas, my larger PP, he's too big to really hide and isn't scared of anything. He loves to be handled, poses for pics, and enjoys hand feeding. I guess it may also depend on individual crab's personalities, how long you have had them, and how much you handle them.

Of my crabs, the straws are the friendliest, they wander around all day, and aren't the least bit frightened of me. My E's are the fastest, and very active, but they don't like to be touched! My Cavipes are the shyest. They stay hidden most of the day. I think I am the only one in our family who has had the patience to actually see my Cavipes :D I have a jumbo PP who is active and unafraid, but the other PP's are more quiet. The Ruggies seem similar to the PP's.

I think straws are just adorable. I'm glad to hear they're friendly. Do they need any special care? Who sells them?

Just as a warning, Straws do require more care and I would not recommend them for someone who is newer at crabbing. They need warmer temps. I try to keep my tank around 80-82 degrees. They also prefer the humidity around 80%. They absolutely need a large enough salt water bath that they can completely submerge their shell in, while have a gentle enough slope for them to easily crawl out. They also like to go in the fresh water baths, so I also have one that deep. They are active, so they need a larger tank to walk along, and they also adore climbing, so I like to have quite a few choya branches for them to hike up.

My tank is always around 75 degrees and humidity 80%. Will get a UTH soon. I have a 10 gal with 2 PPs. I guess if I got one straw I would have to get another as a buddy. I have a climbing background on both short sides of my tank and some wood. I would also like to get a climbing plant. I have a very large shell with fresh water which is defiantly big enough for bathing, and I could get a bigger one for my salt water. Do these conditions sound fine? Where can I find straws?

Straws require very constant conditions. Any dramatic temperature/humidity change can potentially kill them.

Most Straw owners reccomend ATLEAST a 20 gal. Straws almost always are atleast medium size, and need alot of romping space.

As for the personalities, most people say that PP's have the most varying personalities. Some are incredibly sweet, and others are very pinchy. E's tend to be alot more active, and one of mine is fairly shy about handling, she's all PINCH AND RUN! PINCH AND RUN!!!! lol.
She hasn't used her BP on me yet though, only her LP, which is too small really to grab ahold of anything on my hand.

I would say that a 10 gallon tank really isn't big enough. They are serious travelers, and will pace back and forth if they feel confined. Unfortunately, shells full of water will not do for water baths. Straws very rarely are small. Most that I have seen are in the large to jumbo size. They require something more like a tupperware type container. I ended up building a regular "pond" of salt water and a large tupperware for my fresh water bath. That has seemed to keep them the healthiest. The reason I am warning you about this is because Straws are very sensitive. If you don't have the perfect condition, they will die. And it is heartbreaking. I have bought all my straws at Petco. They used to be $4.99 but the price has gone up to $10.99.

My PP's are the friendliest. Most of them pop out to say hi as soon as you pick them up! The ruggies I'm not sure on because I only have two. One is under, so the other one just sits around looking lonely and isn't very active. My E's are little climbing and digging machines and are pretty friendly. The straws are the gentle giants. I haven't had them very long (about 3 weeks) but they usually hang out with the PP's on the bridge in my tank when they're not digging up the tank.
