are reptile tanks safe?

Post by z-the-monster » Sun Oct 05, 2014 8:51 pm

basically, i found a 100-ish gallon tank for free online and the person giving it away says its a reptile only tank. i imagine 100 pounds of wet sand wouldn't work. has anyone used reptile only tanks with success before?
(also i'm a new member, apologies if this is in the wrong place ^^ )

"Reptile" glass is usually MUCH thinner that aquarium glass, so if you really wanted to use it then fill it up outside and be prepared for it to break. Or call and ask because they MAY be referring it as "Reptile only" as in there's a leak and it wont hold water. My bearded dragons cage would never hold any sand, the glass it very very thin compared to my hermit crabs tank. you might be able to tell using the thickness and comparing it too a 100 gallon aquarium?

I'm thinking it's probably leaking, which is why it's reptile only. I've never seen the thinner glass terrariums in that size before, simply because the stress of moving them would be too dangerous!

I don't trust reptile tanks for crabs. They are not meant for the sand. As said above you should test it out first. My dragon and snake live in exo terras with the front opening doors. I wish I could get that for my crabs to make water changes easier but I think the door location is too low for the substrate and the tank can't handle the sand :(
